John Morling Resigns from HKFA Amid Ambitious UAE Project

John Morling’s abrupt exit has left the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) reeling, just months after the Englishman committed his future to the city’s game.

The technical director has resigned to take up a new role in the United Arab Emirates, where he will join an ambitious project built around ending the country’s 40-year wait to return to the World Cup finals.

His departure comes shortly after he signed a fresh two-year deal with the HKFA, a move that had been seen as a vote of confidence in the association’s long-term development plans. Instead, Hong Kong’s technical blueprint has been stripped of its chief architect at a delicate moment.

During Morling’s tenure, the HKFA pushed through several key structural changes. An under-22 Premier League was launched to bridge the gap between youth and senior football, the city hosted its first-ever AFC Pro Licence Diploma, and age-group representative sides became increasingly competitive on the back of a more robust games programme.

Those gains, though, were set against the disappointment of the senior team failing to qualify for next year’s Asian Cup finals. That shortfall ultimately cost head coach Ashley Westwood his job and underlined the gap between developmental progress and results at the top level.

Morling played a central role in the six-month search to replace Westwood, a process that ended in June with the appointment of Roberto Losada as Hong Kong head coach. With Losada only just beginning to put his stamp on the squad, the loss of the man who helped shape the wider technical direction lands at an awkward time.

Morling is currently serving his notice period, and the timing of his final day remains unclear. The HKFA has been asked to clarify the situation and outline how it plans to fill one of the most influential positions in the local game.
