John Obi Mikel Predicts Adam Wharton Will Join Manchester United

John Obi Mikel has nailed his colours to the mast over Adam Wharton’s future – and he sees the Crystal Palace midfielder ending up at Manchester United as early as next year.

Wharton, 22, stayed put at Selhurst Park during the recent transfer window despite heavy interest and a growing reputation that now carries a £60 million valuation on Transfermarkt. Palace held firm, the market moved on, and United went shopping elsewhere.

Mikel’s bold prediction

Speaking on his podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder could barely hide his admiration.

“I love him! I love Adam Wharton, I'm a big, big fan,” Obi Mikel said, before going a step further with a firm prediction about the youngster’s next step.

“I think he's going to go places, though, I think next season he will leave Crystal Palace. I think they want to keep him for one more season. I see him going to Manchester United next season.”

It’s a striking claim, especially given how United actually spent their summer.

United chose a different midfield rebuild

United were among the clubs tracking Wharton heading into the window but stopped short of making a formal move. Instead, INEOS sanctioned a full-scale midfield refresh for Michael Carrick.

Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans all arrived, with the trio costing an upfront total of £148 million. Carrick’s engine room has been rebuilt in one hit, and with that, the door that once seemed ajar for Wharton has quietly swung shut.

For now, at least.

Wharton no longer on United’s immediate agenda

Despite Obi Mikel’s conviction, those close to United’s planning do not see Wharton as a concrete target in M16 anymore. The club have already thrown serious money at the centre of the pitch this year, and the expectation is clear: the next major phase of recruitment will be at the back.

INEOS opted against signing a single defender over the last few months, a call that raised eyebrows given the demands of a season that includes a return to Champions League football. One significant injury in defence could reshape Carrick’s campaign in an instant.

That risk was taken knowingly. It also underlines where the hierarchy intend to spend next.

Eyes on Lewis Hall and the back line

As things stand, United’s priority signing for 2027 is believed to be Lewis Hall. The left-sided defender is viewed internally as the ideal long-term successor to Luke Shaw, who is now 31 and heading into the final nine months of his contract at Old Trafford.

That succession plan, and the defensive rebuild that comes with it, pushes a big-money midfield addition like Wharton down the list.

So Obi Mikel might be right about the player. Wharton does look destined to “go places”. The question is whether Old Trafford will still be waiting for him by the time he’s ready to walk through a new door.
