Joshua Grant Named in Jamaica's Unity Cup Squad
Joshua Grant’s rise has been quick. It just became real.
The 18-year-old FC Naples goalkeeper has been named in Jamaica’s squad for the Unity Cup in London, England, a call that puts him on the brink of his first senior international appearance as the Reggae Boyz open the four-team tournament against India. Nigeria and Zimbabwe complete a competitive field, but for Grant, the headline is simple: he’s in.
This is not a routine selection. Jamaica have opted for an experimental group, and Grant’s inclusion underlines that shift toward youth and upside. The Lauderhill, Florida native only just recorded his first professional shutout in USL League One on Saturday, a composed two-save display in Naples’ 1-0 win over Westchester SC at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex.
Two league appearances. One clean sheet. A negative Goals Prevented mark of -0.32 that hints at work still to be done, but also at the trust already placed in him as the understudy to established starter Lalo Delgado. It’s a small sample, yet the trajectory is clear.
Grant’s impact hasn’t been limited to league play. On May 17, in the Prinx Tires USL Cup against Sporting Club Jacksonville, he stepped into the spotlight during the penalty shootout and delivered the decisive save in the fourth round, dragging Naples over the line. Those are the moments coaches remember when they scan a depth chart and look for a young goalkeeper with the nerve to handle a bigger stage.
“It’s a huge deal,” Grant said of the call-up. “My senior national team, playing with guys who are way older than me and captaining my under-20 team. The momentum is great. I love it here in Naples, and I love my country. Both of them, it’s an amazing feeling.”
That dual sense of belonging — club and country, Naples and Jamaica — sits at the heart of his story. One week he’s backing up Delgado, fighting for minutes and making his case in training. The next, he’s boarding a plane to London to share a dressing room with full internationals, stepping into a competition that could fast-track his development.
He won’t be the only fresh face in camp. The squad also includes another newcomer in Nicholas Simmonds, the former Richmond Kickers Academy standout now with FC Dallas, who has earned his first senior Jamaica call-up. His presence reinforces the theme: this is a Jamaica side casting a wider net, rewarding young players willing to take their chances in demanding environments.
For Grant, the opportunity arrives early, perhaps earlier than most goalkeepers dare to expect. Yet he carries with him a clean sheet, a cup shootout hero moment, and the armband experience of captaining Jamaica’s under-20s.
London will test how far that momentum can take him.
