Julian Alvarez's Atletico Madrid Future in Doubt Amid Training Absence

Julian Alvarez’s stand-off with Atletico Madrid dragged into a third day on Friday, with the forward again missing first-team training and his future at the club hanging by a thread.

The Argentine has stayed away from Diego Simeone’s main group all week. Reports in Spain indicate he could reappear at the training ground on Friday, but only to work alone, away from his team-mates and the usual rhythm of the squad. Atletico do not expect him to feature in Saturday’s LaLiga trip to Sevilla.

This is no minor disciplinary issue. It is the sharp edge of a transfer saga that has turned bitter.

Alvarez is pushing hard for a move to Barcelona, a switch he is described as “desperate” to make. Atletico, though, have drawn a clear red line: they will not strengthen a direct domestic rival.

“Our intention and my personal dream is for him to stay with us, to remain at Atletico,” chief executive Gil Marin said on Thursday, laying out the club’s position in stark terms.

“To compete amongst the greats, you need great players, and Julian is one. If he believes that staying at Atletico is no longer feasible, we will look for an alternative, but it will never, ever be Barcelona.”

That last sentence is the battle line. Barcelona is off the table as far as Atletico are concerned, no matter how hard Alvarez pushes.

The clock, though, is unforgiving. The transfer window shuts on Tuesday night, leaving only a few days to untangle a mess that has now spilled onto the training pitch.

Arsenal are waiting in the wings. The Premier League club continue to work on a deal in the background, and there is an understanding that Atletico could be prepared to sell to the Gunners if the offer hits the right level. That route would give Atletico a major fee without directly arming a LaLiga rival.

One problem: Alvarez has not yet given Arsenal the green light. The London club are effectively on standby, waiting for a signal from the player’s camp that he is ready to consider them as a genuine destination.

Inside Atletico, there is concern not only about the sporting impact but about Alvarez himself.

“Julian is really struggling,” Gil Marin admitted. “There have been people who have set out to deceive and confuse him, and I’m very sorry about that.

“I know him and we’ve been working with him for some time. He’s a great professional and footballer, but he’s very confused and going through a very difficult time, both personally and professionally.”

So the situation sits on a knife-edge. A player training alone, a club refusing to bend to Barcelona, Arsenal circling, and a deadline rushing into view. Something has to give before Tuesday night – the only question is who.
