Julian Alvarez Committed to Atletico Madrid Amid Barcelona Interest

Julian Alvarez is edging towards an Atletico Madrid stay this summer, shutting the door on Barcelona’s push to lure him to Camp Nou.

The Argentina international has reported back for pre-season with Atletico this week and, according to Cadena Ser, has told his team-mates he “made a mistake” in the way he handled Barcelona’s interest. The tone has changed. So has the message.

During World Cup 2026, Alvarez went public with his desire to leave Atletico, a move that lit up Barcelona’s hopes of prising him away from Diego Simeone’s side. Barca moved, placing an offer on the table. Atletico’s response was blunt and furious: they have no intention of selling.

Inside the dressing room, the forward has tried to reset the narrative. The same report says Alvarez has assured colleagues that “his commitment to the shirt is total and that, for however long he has left at Atlético de Madrid, whether it’s a year, three, or two days… the club comes before everything else.”

Barcelona had been waiting for pressure from the player’s side, expecting Alvarez to force the issue and lean on the club for an exit. That push has not arrived. Instead, the 24-year-old is now said to see his future “more with Atlético de Madrid than anywhere else,” a sharp pivot from the noise around his name earlier in the summer.

For now, his reintegration is being managed carefully. Alvarez has been left out of Atletico’s squad for today’s friendly against Marseille, a decision anticipated given he has only just returned to club duty. He will remain in Madrid and continue training while his future, suddenly calmer, appears to be painted in red and white rather than blaugrana.
