Julian Alvarez walked into a storm at the Metropolitano.

At full-time, the image was even starker. While his teammates stayed out on the pitch to applaud the fans, Alvarez turned and headed straight down the tunnel, alone, with whistles following him all the way. A substitution meant to change the match ended up exposing a deeper problem.

Simeone draws a line

Diego Simeone did not dance around the issue afterwards. His position was firm, and pointed squarely at the collective.

"I'm not here to give advice. I have to focus on my job, which is to give my best on the field," he told reporters. "If we want to win a title, we need to be united, have strikers, and have top-level strikers. We all need to work accordingly."

The message was simple: unity or nothing.

Simeone also revealed that the club had taken steps to shield Alvarez from the most hostile parts of the stadium environment in recent weeks.

"People at the club told me that the club decided he shouldn't be near the stands and the fans. The decision was made by the club to keep him away and separate him from the rest of the team, so he would come to the locker room instead," he said.

Then came the reminder of what has underpinned his entire era at Atleti.

"We need to stick together. When we did, we were able to achieve great things. We need strikers. We have them, and we need to take care of them."

The subtext was clear: whatever the noise around Alvarez, Simeone sees him as part of the solution, not a problem to be discarded.

Gil Marin backs Alvarez – and hits back at outside influence

From the boardroom, the tone matched the coach’s. Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin went public with his support for Alvarez, while taking aim at those he believes have steered the Argentine poorly in recent months.

"We are going to help Julian and continue to take care of him so that he can give us his full potential, because we need him to continue competing among the greats of Europe," Gil Marin said.

The backing was explicit. So was the criticism of the people around the player.

"We must understand that Julian has not had the best advisors around him regarding his professional career in recent months," he added.

The target then shifted beyond Alvarez’s inner circle. Gil Marin made it clear he feels Atletico are being pressured and provoked from outside, and he was in no mood to accept it.

"We cannot allow other clubs and their affiliated media to dictate what we have to do, dictate our sporting strategy, and disrespect us. That's precisely what they're trying to do - divide us," he said.

"It's clear we're not as powerful as they are but we have values. We Atletico fans won't let them corrupt us. Atleti is strong when we're all together."

That last line was more than a slogan. On a night when one of their forwards was booed by his own crowd, the club’s hierarchy closed ranks around him and drew a boundary with the outside world.

The question now is whether the stands will follow – or whether Alvarez’s every step at the Metropolitano will keep echoing to the sound of whistles.
