Julian Alvarez Returns to Atletico Madrid Squad Amid Transfer Saga

Julian Alvarez is back in the Atletico Madrid squad and straight into the eye of the storm.

The Argentina forward, at the centre of a simmering transfer saga, has been named on the bench for Atletico’s La Liga clash with Villarreal after being left out of the midweek win over Malaga. Diego Simeone starts without a recognised centre-forward, but he made sure to publicly bring Alvarez back into the fold.

Simeone draws a line

Simeone had already set the tone in his pre-match press conference, confirming Alvarez’s return to the matchday group.

“Julian Alvarez will be in the squad tomorrow,” the Atletico boss said. “For me, Julian is an extremely important player for us to achieve our objectives. As long as he’s with the team, I’m going to look after him.”

The message was clear: while the boardroom and the player wrestle over his future, Simeone still sees him as a key piece of this season’s plans.

Alvarez trained with the squad ahead of Villarreal’s visit, a routine session wrapped in anything but routine circumstances after a turbulent week in the capital.

Fans turn on a World Cup winner

Alvarez’s desire to leave Atletico for Barcelona has gone down badly with sections of the fanbase. They have not kept their anger quiet.

Atletico’s hard line clashes with Alvarez’s own ambitions. The forward is pushing for a move to Barcelona, a prospect that has clearly captured his imagination and, according to reports, unsettled the dressing room and the stands.

He has also been heavily linked with Arsenal. The ex-Manchester City striker is said to have spoken with Mikel Arteta about a possible switch to the Emirates. The interest from north London is real, but the pull is not the same. Barcelona is the move Alvarez wants; Arsenal is an alternative, not the dream.

For now, none of those doors have opened. Atletico are holding firm, Simeone is picking him again, and the player is left in limbo.

From “not ready” to recalled

Alvarez’s absence from the Malaga game only fuelled speculation. Simeone, though, insisted it was down to fitness rather than politics.

“We don’t believe Julián Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow’s game,” he said before that match, pointing to the extended break the forward took after the World Cup.

“Hopefully, over these next four days, he’ll make further progress and we’ll be closer to where we want him to be.”

Four days later, Alvarez is back in the squad. The timing is hard to ignore. Whether this is reconciliation or simply necessity will become clearer with every minute he spends on the pitch – or on the bench.

Atletico plan ahead

While they fight to keep hold of Alvarez, Atletico are already being tipped as frontrunners for another striker. Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea is strongly linked, with reports in Spain suggesting the Senegal international has “said yes” to a move.

That potential deal hangs over the Alvarez saga like a shadow. If Jackson arrives, does that ease the pressure on Atletico to keep their No. 19 at all costs, or simply deepen the competition and tension up front?

For now, the reality is simple: Julian Alvarez is still an Atletico Madrid player, still in Diego Simeone’s squad, and still walking out into a stadium where his own name is on the banners – and not all of them are welcoming.
