Julian Alvarez felt the full force of Atletico Madrid’s anger on Sunday – and the transfer noise around him is only getting louder.

The Argentina forward returned to Diego Simeone’s squad for the 2-2 draw with Villarreal at the Metropolitano after being left out of the midweek win over Malaga to rebuild his fitness following his post-World Cup final break. His name on the teamsheet did nothing to calm the mood.

He was whistled when the line-ups were read out. The reaction grew even sharper just after the hour mark when he came off the bench for ten-man Atletico, the home support making it clear where they stand on a player heavily linked with a move away.

“The club staff told me that the club decided Julian should not go over with his teammates to greet the fans, and that it was not Julian’s decision,” the Atletico coach told reporters. “The club made the decision to keep him away and have him head to the dressing room.

“No, I’m not in a position to give advice to the fans. I think I need to focus on my work, which is to give my best on the sporting side for the good of Atletico de Madrid.

“The only thing I know is that if Atletico de Madrid wants to win a title, we have to be united. We need forwards, and we need important forwards. For that, of course, we all have to work in that direction to give the team what it needs.”

Unity, though, feels a long way off. Alvarez has been open about his desire to join Barcelona this summer, but the LaLiga champions are now understood to be pursuing other options. That shift has dragged Arsenal firmly back into the picture.

Talk of a late move to the Premier League has intensified over the weekend, with suggestions that a big-money switch to north London before the deadline is no longer out of the question.

Whether this was Alvarez’s final appearance in an Atletico shirt is still unclear. What is certain is that every minute he spends on the Metropolitano pitch from here on will be played under a cloud of whistles, rumours and a ticking transfer clock.
