For close to two months, the Argentine forward has pushed one message behind the scenes: he wants Barcelona. He sees himself leading the line at Montjuïc, the club see him as the ideal No. 9 for the new season, and the plan looked simple enough.

Then they ran into Atletico Madrid.

There is another layer. The dressing room at Atleti has not taken kindly to his public desire to leave for Barcelona. Tension has grown. Some team-mates are unimpressed, others outright angry. Alvarez is keen to avoid a season spent in a fractured environment, and that urgency is pushing him to consider options he had parked until now.
