Julian Alvarez's Future at FC Barcelona Amid Atletico Madrid's Stance
Julian Alvarez still sees his future in the colours of FC Barcelona. Atletico Madrid, publicly and privately, see it very differently.
With the summer window ticking towards its close, the Argentine forward continues to hope for a move to Barça. Atletico, though, have drawn a hard line. No talks, no discounts, and certainly no favours for a direct rival. The message from the Metropolitano has been the same all summer: Alvarez is not for sale, least of all to the Blaugrana.
He missed Atletico’s opening game of the 2026/27 season after returning late from World Cup duty, a delayed comeback that only sharpened the focus on his situation. Now comes the real test.
A tense return on the horizon
Diego Simeone confirmed that Alvarez will be back in the squad for tomorrow’s clash with Villarreal, a decision that drags the whole saga out into the open again.
“Yes, he’ll be in tomorrow’s squad and he’s better. He’s progressing at his own pace. We’ll try to manage a complicated, difficult match against a tough opponent with good players,” Simeone said, via Mundo Deportivo.
Leaving him out would have been the easy option. It would have spared Atletico an awkward scene with a fanbase that has already made its displeasure known about the player’s apparent desire to leave.
The calendar had even offered a neat escape route. After Villarreal, Atletico do not play at home again until September 16, when they face Osasuna. Between now and then lie three straight away fixtures: Sevilla, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad.
If Alvarez had been kept out of the Villarreal squad, his first appearance back at the Metropolitano could have come after the transfer window had shut. No more rumours. No more daily speculation. Just games, goals and the slow rebuilding of trust.
Atletico have chosen a bolder route. They want him involved now – for footballing reasons, but also as a statement. Use him, back him, and try to kill the noise.
Simeone slams door on Barca talk
Simeone did not hide behind vague language. He doubled down on the club’s stance and echoed CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, who had already condemned what he sees as a campaign from pro-Barcelona outlets to destabilise Atletico.
“Let it be clear, because at a moment when people are waiting for division and trying to create conflict and uncertainty, there is no uncertainty. Miguel Angel Gil Marin spoke clearly yesterday,” Simeone insisted.
No room for doubt there. No hint of a softening.
From the coach’s perspective, Alvarez is not a problem to be solved, but a pillar to be protected.
“For me, he’s an extremely important player for achieving our sporting objectives. We’ll be with him and look after him from a sporting perspective. Why? Because he’s our player. As long as he’s at Atletico, I’ll look after him.”
The message cuts both ways. To Barcelona: stop looking here. To Alvarez: you are central to what we are building – at least as long as you wear red and white.
Between desire and duty
Simeone admitted he has spoken with Alvarez, though he stopped short of claiming to fully understand the striker’s mindset.
“It’s difficult to say how another person feels because I’m not that person. What I see is that he’s working in the best possible way, working with his teammates and showing respect to everyone.”
So the coach sees commitment on the training pitch, respect in the dressing room, and a player who, at least outwardly, remains professional. Inside, the forward may still dream of Camp Nou and a Barça shirt. Only he knows that.
Atletico believe they have chosen the right path: stand firm, back their asset, and ride out the storm. Villarreal will be the first real gauge of how that strategy plays out – in the stands, on the pitch, and in the body language of a striker caught between the club he has and the move he wants.
