Juventus Sign Jhon Lucumi as New Defensive Leader

Juventus have their new defensive anchor – and they paid decisively to get him.

The club have wrapped up a deal for Jhon Lucumi, reaching an agreement with Bologna for an initial €18 million fee, with a further €2m tied to add-ons. The Colombian centre-back has signed a four-year contract in Turin, worth €3m net per season, a clear sign that he is being brought in as a cornerstone rather than a squad option.

Crucially, Lucumi wanted this move. Faced with multiple offers, he pushed for Juventus, making the Bianconeri his priority and leaving no doubt about where he saw the next step of his career.

From Cali to Turin

Lucumi’s journey has been steady, not flashy. He broke through at Deportivo Cali at just 17, then crossed to Europe and grew into one of Belgium’s standout defenders with Genk from 2018 onwards. That rise convinced Bologna to bring him to Serie A in the summer of 2022.

In Emilia-Romagna, he became non-negotiable. Over four seasons with the Rossoblu, Lucumi amassed 152 appearances in all competitions, a constant presence at the heart of their defence. He even tasted Champions League football with Bologna, scoring one of his two goals for the club at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara and helping to anchor a side that punched above its weight.

Juventus made sure to underline the significance of the signing in their official announcement, hailing Lucumi as “a player at the peak of his powers, ready to make an immediate contribution to the team ahead of the 2026/27 season.” The message ended with a simple line that carried plenty of weight: “Welcome to Juventus, Jhon!”

Ready to lead a new backline

There will be no easing-in period. With the move completed, Lucumi will head straight into tactical sessions with his new team-mates as the coaching staff reshape a backline designed to look different – and far more secure – in the coming campaign.

The calendar wastes no time. Juventus open their 2026-27 Serie A season away to Frosinone on Sunday, August 23, a fixture already circled as Lucumi’s likely competitive debut. If all goes to plan, the Colombian will walk out that day as the man charged with marshalling a new-look defence.

Juventus have paid for a leader. Now they expect him to play like one.
