Cristiano Ronaldo's Last Season? Reflecting on His Legacy
Cristiano Ronaldo has opened the door to the final chapter of his extraordinary career, admitting this could be his last season in professional football.
The 41-year-old, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner and one of the game’s defining figures, spoke candidly about his future in an interview with Vogue after marrying long-time partner Georgina Rodríguez on Tuesday.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” he said, drawing a clear line under a journey that has stretched across a quarter of a century at the very top.
Ronaldo, who has spent his life living to the rhythm of training sessions, finals and title races, now sounds ready for a different pace. He said he is “looking forward to spending more time with the family,” explaining that he already has his future “all mapped out.”
“I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard,” he added. “Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.”
The competitive fire remains, but the priorities have shifted. He spoke about wanting “more fun,” more travel, more time watching and playing padel – a sport he says he really enjoys – and, crucially, the chance to savour what his career has brought him.
“And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned – what we’ve earned. Because, after all, it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.”
Chasing 1,000
Even as he talks about life after football, one final target still looms.
Ronaldo has scored 976 goals for club and country, an astonishing total amassed with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Portugal, among others. He featured and found the net at his sixth World Cup this summer – an all-time record – even if the explosive, unstoppable version of Ronaldo that once bent entire tournaments to his will now belongs to another era.
One number has long sat in his mind: 1,000 career goals.
It remains within reach. Playing in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr, where he has one year left on his contract, the forward has the platform to chase that last, outrageous milestone.
If this truly is his final season, the countdown is on – not just to goodbye, but to see whether the sport’s great relentless scorer can bend the numbers one last time to his will.
