Juventus Targets Zirkzee as David's Future Uncertain

Joshua Zirkzee’s Premier League exile might be nearing its end. Juventus have moved decisively for the Dutch forward, and, crucially, they now have a green light from Manchester United to explore a loan deal, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

For a player born in 2001 who arrived in England with high expectations, the last two years have felt flat. Limited impact, little rhythm, and a growing sense that his game belongs elsewhere. Zirkzee has made no secret of his nostalgia for Serie A, where he flourished with Bologna, and has already signalled full willingness to wear the black and white of the Bianconeri.

This is not just another name on a list. It looks like the start of a changing of the guard in Turin.

David’s future grows cloudier

Jonathan David’s position at Juventus grows more fragile by the day. His early withdrawal in a friendly against Chelsea in Hong Kong felt like more than a precaution. Symbolically, it looked like the beginning of a summer handover.

The Canadian arrived to great expectation but delivered a modest return: eight goals in a disappointing first season. He wants to stay, to prove that the prolific Lille version of himself was no mirage, and within the club his professionalism is respected. Yet the market does not wait for redemption arcs.

If Massara can close a loan for Zirkzee on the terms Juventus want, David may find the door opening behind him rather than in front.

Massara’s calculated gamble

At Continassa, sporting director Ricky Massara is driving the operation with clear parameters. He is pushing for a straight loan without any obligation to buy, a structure designed to protect a balance sheet already stretched by the arrival of Randal Kolo Muani.

Juventus have committed heavily to the Frenchman: €38 million plus €12m in guaranteed add-ons agreed with Paris Saint-Germain. That deal has sharply reduced their room for manoeuvre. Any move for Zirkzee, then, must be smart rather than spectacular.

Massara knows the player well. He tried to bring Zirkzee to Roma in a previous life and now senses an opening he considers too good to ignore. This time, he wants to make sure the door actually swings his way.

Not a classic No. 9, but a different dimension

Zirkzee is not a pure penalty-box striker. He drifts, links, dictates. For some coaches, that ambiguity is a problem. For Luciano Spalletti, it looks more like a gift.

His technical quality and international experience would add a different layer to Juventus’ attack. In Serie A with Bologna, he showed he can orchestrate play at a high level, dropping between the lines, drawing defenders out, and creating space for runners around him.

Kolo Muani brings depth runs and power. Zirkzee, if he arrives, brings pause and precision. Together, they could reshape the way Juventus build attacks.

But nothing moves until the David situation does.

Everything hinges on that first piece. David wants to stay and repair his reputation in Turin. Juventus, though, cannot ignore the chance to bring in Zirkzee on a relatively low-risk deal.

If the loan is agreed on their terms, the Canadian may have to confront a stark choice: fight for minutes in a crowded attack or accept an exit after just one year, a short chapter in a career that once seemed destined to explode in Italy.

Negotiations with United are expected to ramp up in the coming days as Massara looks to nail down the agreement. The structure, the salary contribution, the conditions of the loan – all of it must align before Juventus can move a piece as significant as David.

Backup plans at Stamford Bridge

Juventus are not walking this tightrope without a safety net. Should talks with United collapse late in the window, the club have already mapped out alternative routes.

Several Chelsea forwards remain under close observation: Nicolas Jackson, Emmanuel Emegha, and Liam Delap are all being monitored as potential late-window solutions for Spalletti’s front line. None carry the same Serie A guarantee as Zirkzee, but they offer different profiles if the primary plan falls apart.

For now, though, the picture is clear. One Dutch forward who misses Italy, one Canadian striker fighting to stay, and a sporting director trying to thread the financial needle.

If Massara lands Zirkzee on loan, Juventus won’t just tweak their attack. They will redraw it.
