Kieran McKenna: Prime Candidate to Succeed Marco Silva at Fulham
Kieran McKenna has emerged as Fulham’s prime candidate to succeed Marco Silva, with the club ready to test Ipswich Town’s resolve over their highly rated manager.
Silva’s departure for Benfica has left a sizeable hole at Craven Cottage, and Fulham’s hierarchy view McKenna as the man to fill it. He is understood to be interested in the role, but there is a major obstacle: promotion has driven his buyout clause up to around £8million, a figure that will make even Premier League clubs pause.
Fulham’s big call
Fulham are at a crossroads. Under Silva, they stabilised, then pushed. Three straight seasons of mid-table security since promotion in 2022, never finishing lower than 13th, have changed expectations. An 11th-place finish last season – their second in a row – came with a sting. They missed out on European football by a single point, finishing just behind Brighton in eighth.
Fourteen years have passed since Fulham last played in Europe. They came close to ending that wait. Now, with Silva gone, the question is whether they double down on ambition or retreat to something safer, cheaper, and less risky.
McKenna would be a statement. An £8m statement.
McKenna’s rise
The Northern Irishman has built a reputation as one of the sharpest young coaches in the country. At Ipswich, his work has been relentless and transformative.
He has just celebrated his third promotion with the club. The Tractor Boys finished second behind Coventry City in the Championship, sealing an immediate return to the Premier League. McKenna had already dragged Ipswich from League One to the top flight with back-to-back promotions, only to see them relegated in 2025. He then rebuilt and went again.
That kind of resilience appeals to owners. So does his age. At 40, McKenna is both proven and still on the rise.
He signed his current deal at Portman Road in May 2024, tying him down for another two years. Ipswich, with the Premier League back on the horizon, are under no pressure to sell. Any club that wants him will have to pay.
Competition for his signature
Fulham are not alone. Several top-flight rivals have already circled, sensing an opportunity ahead of next season.
Crystal Palace have explored the possibility of appointing McKenna during their own managerial search, though their attention has now turned towards Lens boss Pierre Sage as they look to build on their recent Europa Conference League success.
Bournemouth also considered McKenna before moving for Marco Rose as Andoni Iraola’s replacement. Even Celtic have been linked in recent months, a reminder that his stock is rising beyond England’s borders.
The market has noticed his work. Fulham are stepping into a crowded race.
Cheaper routes – and a familiar name
There are alternatives at Craven Cottage. Cheaper ones.
Among them is former Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank. The Dane is available after his dismissal from Spurs in February and comes with deep Premier League experience. Before his brief and ill-fated spell in north London, he spent seven years in charge of Brentford, guiding the Bees into the Premier League for the first time and establishing them there.
Frank would cost nothing in compensation and knows west London inside out. For a club wary of an £8m outlay on McKenna, that profile carries weight.
Ambition versus pragmatism
So Fulham’s decision is stark. Do they pay a premium for one of the most coveted young coaches in the country, a manager who has already proved he can lift a club and sustain momentum through setbacks? Or do they pivot to a more affordable, more experienced option such as Frank, banking on know-how rather than potential?
Silva pushed Fulham to the edge of Europe and normalised mid-table comfort. The next appointment will decide whether that becomes a platform or the high-water mark.
McKenna is interested. Ipswich will fight. The fee is high, the competition real. Fulham must now decide how much their future is worth.
