Nottingham Forest Sign Ousmane Diomande for £34.3m

Nottingham Forest have made their big defensive move of the summer, sealing the signing of Ivory Coast centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting on a four-year deal worth around £34.3m (€40m).

This is not a speculative punt. It is a targeted signing driven by head coach Oliver Glasner, who pushed hard for Diomande after trying to bring him to Crystal Palace. This time, he got his man.

Forest have been clear they wanted a commanding presence at the heart of their defence. At 22, Diomande already brings the kind of pedigree many clubs pay for twice in a player’s career, not once at the start of it.

He arrives from Sporting having played 132 times, scored seven goals and lifted the Primeira Liga title twice in four seasons. Last year he helped them to a domestic double and into the Champions League knockout stages, a run that hardened him against some of Europe’s sharpest attacks.

Chief football officer George Syrianos did not hide the club’s satisfaction at finally closing the deal. No wonder he sounded energised by the move.

“I am very happy to be here. It is a historic club, and it motivates me to join such a club,” he said after signing. He spoke of “very good things” being possible this season and promised to “give my best and all I can to help the team,” already looking ahead to his first meeting with the Forest supporters at the City Ground.

For a fanbase that thrives on connection and commitment, those words will land well. The test now is how quickly he can translate them into performances.

A squad taking shape

Diomande’s arrival headlines what has been a busy window at Forest, one that points to a significant reshaping of the dressing room.

He joins a list of new faces that includes Boyd Fraser from Hearts, Mason Ayre from Glentoran, Blaine McClure from Rangers, Xaver Schlager from RB Leipzig on a free, Grady McDonnell from Club Brugge and Kasen Brown from Manchester City. The outgoing list is just as revealing.

Elliot Anderson’s eye-catching £116m move to Manchester City dominates the departures, while David Carmo and Jota Silva have both headed to Olympiacos, the latter on loan. A cluster of players — Cormac Daly, Angus Gunn, Ben Hammong, Justin Hanks, Danny Anisjko — have left on frees, with moves to clubs such as Hearts, San Jose Earthquakes, Boston United, Solihull Moors and Chesterfield. Willy Boly, Stefan Ortega, Shae Cahill and Esapa Osong have also been released.

The message is clear: this is Glasner’s rebuild. Power, mobility and mentality at the back; younger depth and experience sprinkled through the squad; high-value assets moved on to fund the next phase.

Diomande sits at the centre of that plan. Forest have paid a Champions League price for a Champions League-tested defender.
