Lamine Camara Focused on Monaco After Chelsea Move Collapse

Lamine Camara insists he has “turned the page” on his collapsed move to Chelsea and is now locked in on Monaco’s fast-starting Ligue 1 campaign.

The 22-year-old midfielder had undergone a medical ahead of a proposed £47.1m switch to Stamford Bridge, only for the transfer to unravel in the final hours of the window. What looked like a done deal never made it over the line.

“It didn't go through at the last minute and that's part of football,” Camara said before Monaco’s game against Strasbourg on Saturday. “I've turned the page and am focusing on the season.”

It had been a chaotic end to the window for Monaco. Two Chelsea bids for Camara had already been rejected, the club holding firm as they weighed up how to balance their squad and their books. As the deadline loomed, Monaco softened their stance and lowered the asking price, with pressure building to make at least one major sale.

At the same time, Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton wobbled. With that transfer in doubt, Camara suddenly looked the more likely departure. When Balogun’s deal appeared to be back on track, Monaco seemed ready to keep their midfield anchor after all.

In the end, the twist was brutal for all sides: both Balogun and Camara stayed put.

Sources in France had indicated Monaco needed a significant outgoing this summer and would rather cash in on Balogun than lose Camara. Inside the club, the message had been clear for months – it would take a “substantial fee” to prise the Senegal international away.

Chelsea tested that resolve. Monaco, after some late wavering, ultimately held their ground.

On the pitch, the decision looks easier to justify. Monaco have opened the season with three straight Ligue 1 wins and went into the weekend second in the table behind Rennes, with a game in hand. Camara’s presence in midfield is central to that momentum.

“I can help the team a lot,” he said. “Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I'm staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

The Premier League door has closed for now. The shop window has not.
