Lee Clark Resigns as Hartlepool United Head Coach

Lee Clark resigned as Hartlepool United head coach with immediate effect after a bruising afternoon at Victoria Park ended in a 3-1 home defeat to Worthing.

The loss, greeted by open calls from home supporters for Clark to go, marked a third straight defeat and a sixth in seven National League matches. By the time the final whistle went, Pools were slumped in 18th place ahead of the rest of the afternoon’s fixtures – a stark picture for a club that still talks about getting back into the English Football League.

Clark, appointed in the summer after a short stint with Rotherham United at the end of last season, did not wait long to make his decision public.

“I resign from my position with immediate effect,” the former Newcastle, Sunderland and Fulham midfielder told BBC Radio Tees, his voice carrying the weight of a project that never caught fire.

“I wanted to give this club and the fans something to be proud of, what they deserve, but I haven't been able to do that unfortunately.”

The pressure had been building for weeks. Performances dipped, results followed, and the optimism that greeted his arrival drained away. Saturday felt like a breaking point.

Clark, who previously managed Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City, admitted the disappointment of a tenure that promised far more than it delivered.

“I was excited to take the job and I wanted to be the man to get them back to where they need to be and deserve to be, but it hasn't worked out,” he said.

His departure leaves Hartlepool back at a familiar crossroads.

The club were taken over in January by American businessman Landon Smith, whose arrival was supposed to mark the start of a push out of the National League and an end to a four-year stay outside the EFL. Ambition has not been in short supply. Stability has.

With Clark gone, Pools now begin the hunt for their ninth permanent manager or head coach in that same four-year spell.

Another reset. Another rebuild. And the same unforgiving question hanging over Victoria Park: who can finally turn this around?
