Lion City Sailors Fire Coach Jesus Casas Before SPL Season Opener

Lion City Sailors have stunned Singapore football by sacking head coach Jesus Casas just five days before they open the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) campaign against Tampines Rovers.

The club confirmed the decision on Sept 1 with a brief, 30-word statement on Facebook, announcing that they had parted ways with the Spaniard and that assistant coach Varo Moreno would take charge of the first team until further notice.

No explanation. No tribute. Just a clean break on the eve of a new season.

Casas’ exit ends a remarkably short stint. Appointed only in February, the former Iraq coach arrived with a long-term mandate, having signed a contract running through to the end of the 2027-28 season with the reigning SPL champions.

His resume had carried weight. Before taking the Iraq job, the 52-year-old had worked extensively with youth teams in Spain and served as assistant manager to Javi Gracia at English side Watford in early 2018. In Singapore, he had also been seriously considered for the national team post, making the shortlist for a role that eventually went to Gavin Lee.

His name has not been far from the international rumour mill either. The Korea Herald recently reported that Casas had applied for the vacant South Korea national team job and that he was one of three candidates on the final shortlist.

Now his chapter with the Sailors is over almost as quickly as it began.

Casas had come in as the replacement for Serbian coach Aleksandar Rankovic, who was dismissed on Feb 6, a day after a 2-0 home defeat by Cambodian side Svay Rieng in the Asean Club Championship. Rankovic’s tenure had been a curious mix: success on the domestic front but disappointment in Asia.

He delivered the Singapore Cup for the third time during a 2½-year spell that also brought an SPL title, yet he also presided over a group-stage exit in Asian Champions League Two, just a season after the club’s dream run to the final of the same competition.

The Sailors still underlined their domestic dominance on May 3. A goalless draw against Tampines Rovers was enough to clinch back-to-back SPL titles for the first time in the club’s history, finishing the season two points clear of the Stags.

Now, the same opponents stand in their way again.

The two sides meet on Sept 6 in the Community Shield at Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm, the traditional curtain-raiser to the 2026-27 SPL season. Moreno will lead the Sailors into that clash under intense scrutiny, with the champions suddenly looking far less settled than their recent record suggests.

The league campaign then begins in earnest on Sept 12, when the Sailors face Hougang United at Bishan Stadium, also at 7.30pm. By then, the question will already be hanging over the club: is this another short-term fix, or the start of a very different era for Singapore’s modern powerhouse?
