Why Lionel Messi Will Miss the MLS All-Star Game After His Historic 2026 World Cup Run

Lionel Messi, the standout star of Major League Soccer, is set to skip this year’s MLS All-Star game despite his huge profile. Fresh off an extraordinary 2026 World Cup where he reminded everyone why he's one of the greatest players ever, Messi plans to take a significant break before rejoining Inter Miami.

This means MLS will be without its brightest name during one of the season’s key showcases. Here’s what we know about Messi’s decision to sit out the All-Star event.

Reasons Behind Skipping the All-Star Game

Messi was selected for his third straight MLS All-Star game while still competing in the World Cup, having scored 12 goals and assisted eight times over 14 matches in the league. However, he won’t be participating in the All-Star match, which falls within the mandatory 21-day rest period given to players after their seasons end.

Alongside fellow Argentine and Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul, Messi intends to coordinate with the club on when they’ll return to play. Both stars are expected to miss at least the next two matches for Miami according to Sports Business Journal.

When Could Messi Return to Inter Miami?

There’s no exact date yet for Messi’s comeback. He is confirmed to miss the upcoming All-Star game and a couple of league fixtures. Messi will travel to Miami, then head back to his hometown Rosario for some downtime.

The official rest period began on Monday, July 20, lasting until August 10. Taking the full break would cause Messi to miss up to five games for Inter Miami beyond the All-Star weekend.

Messi's Last Appearance for Inter Miami

Messi last appeared on the field for Miami on May 24. During that match against Philadelphia Union, he contributed two assists and took three shots before leaving in the 73rd minute due to a leg discomfort. Thankfully, it was only a precaution, as he went on to perform impressively in the World Cup, scoring eight goals and assisting four times as Argentina reached the final.

MLS All-Star Game Details

The All-Star game is scheduled for Wednesday, July 29. It will showcase top MLS talents facing off against elite players from Liga MX. The roster includes notable names like Richie Laryea, Matt Freese, Lucas Herrington, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, and Son Heung-Min, who have all made waves on the international stage recently.

Messi's Age and Standing in MLS

At 39 years old, Messi ranks as the sixth-oldest player currently in MLS. Only Diego Chara, Hugo Lloris, Luis Suarez, Maxi Moralez, and Alejandro Bedoya are older. Despite his age, Messi’s performances continue to captivate fans around the world.
