Liverpool's Stefan Bajcetic and Calvin Ramsay Face Uncertain Futures

Liverpool’s changing of the guard is gathering pace – and for Stefan Bajcetic and Calvin Ramsay, Anfield now looks more like a closed chapter than a home.

Bajcetic on brink of emotional Celta return

Four years ago, Liverpool quietly slipped a 16-year-old out of Celta Vigo’s academy for £224,000, a smart December 2020 raid on LaLiga’s youth ranks that looked like it might pay off handsomely.

By 2022/23, it seemed it already had. Bajcetic, elegant and combative in equal measure, played 19 times under Jurgen Klopp and was quickly rewarded with a long-term deal. He was talked about as part of Liverpool’s midfield future, not a footnote.

Then the injuries came. Not one dramatic, headline-grabbing setback, but the kind of persistent, niggling problems that stall momentum and test patience. Since May 2024, he has not played a single competitive minute for Liverpool.

The club responded by sending him out on loan, first to Red Bull Salzburg and then to Las Palmas in the 2024/25 season, searching for rhythm and resilience in someone else’s shirt.

Now, at 21, the next move looks likely to be permanent.

In Spain, Faro de Vigo report that Bajcetic has become a leading target for his old club Celta. Talks have taken place over a return six years after he left Vigo for Merseyside, and the tone from Galicia is clear: they want him back. The paper describes him as “closer than ever to returning home”.

There is, however, a hard line in the deal. Celta, working within tighter financial limits, need Liverpool to terminate the final year of his contract to make the move viable. No fee, no negotiation over a price – just a clean break.

Liverpool are understood to be weighing it up. With little prospect of banking a significant transfer fee, the club could instead protect their position by inserting a future sell-on clause into any exit, effectively betting on Bajcetic rebuilding his value back in Spain.

If that happens, his Liverpool story ends not with a farewell appearance at Anfield, but with a contract cancellation and a return to where it all began.

Ramsay’s fifth loan spells the end

On the other side of the squad, another once-bright project has already stepped through the door.

Calvin Ramsay has left again. This time to St Mirren, on what feels like the final swing of the revolving loan door.

Liverpool paid Aberdeen £4.2m for him in June 2022, a bold investment in a teenager meant to push and cover Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. The idea was clear: energy, delivery, and long-term depth on the flank.

The reality never matched the plan. Ramsay has played just four games for Liverpool. One Scotland cap arrived, but at club level he never convinced as a genuine option for the first team.

Loan spells followed – Preston, Bolton, Wigan, then Kilmarnock last season. Across those four clubs he managed only 26 appearances, with his most active stint coming at Wigan, where he played 12 times in the 2024/25 campaign.

Now 21 and in the final year of his Liverpool contract, he has been sent to St Mirren on a season-long loan. There is no option to buy written into the deal, but the direction of travel is obvious. With his contract running down, this move effectively signals the end of his Liverpool career.

For St Mirren, it is a low-risk chance to revive a full-back whose development has stalled. For Ramsay, it is an opportunity he cannot afford to waste – a season in Paisley to prove he still has the tools that once persuaded Liverpool to invest heavily in him.

For Liverpool, under new boss Andoni Iraola, it is another sign of a squad being stripped back and reshaped. Bajcetic stands on the brink of a return to Celta, Ramsay is out on loan again with little prospect of a comeback.

The club moves on. The question now is whether these two can do the same.
