The Paris Saint-Germain winger has been the club’s headline target for weeks, with personal terms already understood to be agreed on a move to Anfield. The problem sits where it so often does in August: the fee.

Talks between Liverpool and PSG have dragged on without a breakthrough over the 23-year-old, despite French journalist Fabrice Hawkins reporting recently that everyone involved expected an agreement to be found. That confidence is now being tested by a familiar threat.

Arsenal circle as talks stall

Arsenal, for now, are watching. The Gunners are said to be kept fully briefed on the situation and believe the France international could be tempted by a move to north London, even though he has already indicated he’s happy with a switch to Merseyside.

“Liverpool and PSG still have no agreement on Barcola; there’s a significant gap in valuation. Arsenal haven’t completely gone away and could aggressively enter the conversation again if it becomes clear this deal is really stalling,” one source told the outlet.

The warning is clear. If Liverpool leave the door open, Arsenal are prepared to walk straight through it.

A gamble Liverpool may have to take

Right now, Liverpool remain Barcola’s preferred destination. That matters. But every day without a deal gives rival clubs more encouragement and the player more uncertainty.

Liverpool’s hierarchy will be wary of being dragged into a bidding war or paying far beyond their own valuation. Yet the question is brutally simple: if £10m is the difference between landing their top target and watching him line up for a direct rival, is that a risk they can afford not to take?

Andoni Iraola heads into today’s Premier League opener against Newcastle with Federico Chiesa as his only natural right winger. Barcola operates mainly from the left, but his versatility across the front line and his track record at the highest level make him an obvious fit for a squad that needs depth and dynamism in attack.

PSG have already frozen him out amid the uncertainty over his future. That stand-off harms the player but hands Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes a clear opportunity: structure an offer that tests PSG’s resolve and turns a stalemate into a sale.

This is no longer just about adding another forward. It is about intent at the top of the Premier League.

For Liverpool, missing out on Barcola at this stage would sting. Watching him unveiled at Arsenal would cut far deeper. With nine days left in the window, the choice is stark: push this deal over the line, or live with the consequences of seeing a long-term target lighting up the league in the wrong shade of red.
