Liverpool’s summer rebuild is starting to squeeze one of their own, and a familiar Premier League face could be the one to pull the trigger.

Three new arrivals have already walked through the doors at Anfield: Jeremy Jacquet, Ronald Araujo and Victor Munoz. Araujo, the headline addition, has joined on loan from Barcelona with an option to buy set at €55m, shoring up a defence that badly needed depth.

With the back line addressed, Liverpool’s gaze has swung out wide. The focus is on a double swoop for PSG duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye. If both land on Merseyside, the domino effect could be brutal for some of the existing cast. Tottenham are watching closely, with Cody Gakpo expected to be given the green light to leave if Liverpool complete their business on the flanks.

The Athletic have already flagged Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Curtis Jones as players who could depart before the window slams shut. Of that trio, Jones looks the most exposed.

The 25-year-old is into the final year of his contract. There are no talks over an extension. No soft noises about “ongoing dialogue”. Just silence and a growing sense that Liverpool are ready to cash in.

Inter Milan have been pushing hardest. The Serie A champions tried to prise Jones away in January and came back again this summer, only to see two bids knocked back, the highest at around €30m. Liverpool’s stance at that point was clear: closer to €40m-€45m or no deal.

That line is starting to move.

Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano now says Inter believe Liverpool will sell for €35m, around £30m. Writing on X, he reported that Inter have kept Jones as a “priority target” since May and now feel a deal at that fee is realistic. They are waiting, though, for one key exit before making what they hope will be a decisive offer.

Newcastle’s midfield search could unlock the move

That exit is Davide Frattesi. Inter want to offload the Italy international before launching their next bid for Jones. If they find a buyer, the path to Anfield opens up.

This is where Newcastle United step into the story.

Newcastle are suddenly light in midfield after reluctantly selling Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for £75m. Their attempts to replace him have not gone smoothly: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned them down, while another target, Joao Palhinha, is heading towards Aston Villa.

So the search continues, and Frattesi has been pushed into their eyeline. TEAMtalk revealed on Tuesday that Newcastle have been offered the 26-year-old, with Inter’s asking price set at around €30m, roughly £26m.

For Newcastle, it’s a straightforward calculation: pay the fee, add a proven Serie A midfielder, and steady a midfield that has lost its heartbeat. For Inter, the equation is even simpler. Sell Frattesi, free up funds and space, then go hard for Jones.

If Newcastle decide Frattesi is the answer, they won’t just be reshaping their own midfield. They could be the catalyst that finally pries Curtis Jones away from his boyhood club and sends him to the San Siro for £30m.
