Liverpool Firm on Gakpo as Spurs Pursue Savinho for £85m
Tottenham’s summer rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi is accelerating, but one of their headline attacking targets now looks set to be taken off the table by Liverpool.
Cody Gakpo, who has agreed personal terms with Spurs and told Liverpool he wants to leave, is unlikely to be wearing white by the time the window shuts, according to one well-connected reporter.
Liverpool dig in over Gakpo
Liverpool’s stance is clear: they will only consider selling Gakpo for big money. The asking price is understood to start at around £60million and could climb towards £70m.
The Dutchman endured an inconsistent campaign at Anfield last season, but his stock rose again on the international stage. Playing off the left, he hit three goals at the World Cup before the Netherlands’ shock exit to Morocco, a run that appeared to restore his confidence and remind clubs of his ceiling.
Tottenham, having already reinforced De Zerbi’s defence and midfield, have turned their attention to wide forwards. The Italian has pushed for both Gakpo and Savinho, viewing them as flexible attackers capable of operating across the front line and raising the technical level of the squad.
Spurs sources believe a £60m offer for the 27-year-old could seriously test Liverpool’s resolve. The London club are prepared to move, and Gakpo’s willingness to join has never been in doubt.
Yet talkSPORT transfer reporter Alex Crook insists Liverpool are ready to block the move.
“I don’t think it will happen. Speaking to sources at Liverpool they think he’s had a good pre-season under Iraola, they think he’s a player that Iraola can get the best out of,” Crook told Last Word on Spurs.
“I think he probably would be open to the move, but at the moment that’s not one I expect to happen between now and deadline day.”
That belief inside Anfield – that new boss Andoni Iraola can unlock Gakpo – has changed the mood. What looked like an opportunity for Spurs is hardening into a flat refusal.
Spurs turn the spotlight fully on Savinho
With Gakpo drifting out of reach, Tottenham are preparing to go all-in on Savinho.
Personal terms with the Brazilian are already in place. Spurs also tried to prise him away from Manchester City last summer but failed to convince the Premier League champions to cash in, and Savinho responded by signing a new deal at the Etihad.
This time, Tottenham sense an opening.
According to The Times, talks are ongoing between Spurs and City over a huge £85m move for the 22-year-old. Earlier in the window, Savinho had been valued in the £60-65m bracket. That figure now looks obsolete, with City’s position forcing Spurs to crank up their offer if they want a breakthrough.
The numbers are eye-watering, but not out of character. Recent captures of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have already underlined Tottenham’s willingness to throw serious money behind De Zerbi’s vision and push hard for a return to European competition.
If Liverpool hold firm on Gakpo and City finally budge on Savinho, De Zerbi’s wide options could be transformed by one blockbuster deal. The question now is simple: will Spurs go all the way to £85m to get their man?
