Liverpool Faces Setback in Ismaïla Sarr Transfer Pursuit

Liverpool’s search for a successor to Mohamed Salah has hit another wall, with Crystal Palace shutting the door on an approach for Ismaïla Sarr.

The Reds sounded out Palace over the 28-year-old winger as the transfer window ticks towards its close and, according to reports, even tabled a bid of €58.4 million. Fabrizio Romano has claimed an offer went in at that figure, though the Athletic countered that no formal bid arrived. What is clear is that Liverpool made an enquiry – and the answer from Palace was blunt: Sarr is not for sale.

The stance is nothing new. Galatasaray have already tested Palace’s resolve twice this summer and were turned away on both occasions. The Turkish club are not expected to come back with a third offer, and Palace’s position has only hardened as Sarr’s importance to Andoni Iraola’s side has grown.

Minteh Price Tag Forces a Rethink

Liverpool’s move towards Sarr comes after a complicated, at times frustrating, summer-long trawl through the right-wing market.

Yankuba Minteh was high on their list. Iraola’s men had also targeted the Brighton winger, only for the deal to stall once the numbers came into focus. Brighton’s valuation, believed to be around €90m, dragged the negotiations into a territory Liverpool were unwilling to enter. Interest cooled. The search moved on.

That shift pushed Sarr into sharper focus. Proven in the Premier League. Explosive in wide areas. A player who has already shown he can carry a team in Europe.

Palace Star at His Peak

Sarr’s profile explains the scramble. The Senegalese forward has racked up 116 Premier League appearances and has just come off a standout campaign as Palace lifted the Europa Conference League. He struck 21 goals for the Eagles across the season, a haul that inevitably alerted clubs with Champions League ambitions.

For Palace, that return only strengthens their resolve. Losing a talisman this late in the window risks ripping the spine out of Iraola’s project. For Liverpool, it means they are once again staring at a closed door in a market where the few elite right-wingers available are either prohibitively expensive or simply unattainable.

Barcola Talks Add Another Layer

Liverpool are not limiting themselves to the right flank. Discussions are also ongoing with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, whose preferred role is on the left. The French international offers a different profile and would reshape the front line in another way, but he does not solve the core question on the right.

So the picture is clear. Minteh has been priced out. Sarr is locked down at Palace. Barcola sits on a different side of the pitch.

The window is closing fast. Liverpool know exactly what they need. The real question now is whether the market will give it to them.
