Liverpool's Late Transfer Activity Heats Up

Liverpool’s quiet window has suddenly caught fire.

Within a few hours, the club have reportedly tied up a second deal as Andoni Iraola pushes for late reinforcements before Tuesday’s transfer deadline. The focus has been on wide players all month, but the latest move underlines a broader rebuild taking shape behind the scenes.

Liverpool step up late business

Liverpool’s primary mission remains clear: find a left-sided attacker to help cover the void left by Mohamed Salah. Bradley Barcola has emerged as the leading candidate, with talks said to be progressing quickly and optimism around completing the move before the window slams shut.

Ismaila Sarr has also entered the conversation as a secondary option, his name surfacing around the time of Saturday’s draw with Nottingham Forest. The message was obvious – Liverpool want more pace and threat out wide, and they want it now.

But Iraola’s plans run deeper than just the flanks.

Earlier on Monday, reports claimed Liverpool had agreed a £30 million deal with Genk for goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, a significant outlay in a position that already boasts strong competition. It was the first real jolt of activity in what had been a relatively subdued window.

The second came quickly.

N'Guessan lined up as long-term striking option

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have now reached an agreement to sign Saint-Etienne striker Djylian N'Guessan. The 18-year-old has reportedly been given the green light to undergo a medical as the deadline looms.

This is not an immediate fix. N'Guessan is expected to link up with the Liverpool squad in the summer of 2027, a long-term play that fits neatly with the club’s recent emphasis on youth recruitment.

With his contract at Saint-Etienne due to expire next summer, French outlet Foot Mercato previously reported that the Ligue 2 club had already “opened the door” to his departure. Liverpool have stepped through it, adding another highly rated prospect to a growing core of young talent at Anfield.

The strategy is clear: strengthen the first team where possible, but never stop planning three, four years ahead.

Iraola’s wider rebuild

Iraola has been open about his priorities, but he has also hinted that Liverpool’s late-window plans were never going to be limited to just one position.

“The priority has been to strengthen in the wide areas,” he admitted, while also stressing that other moves could happen if the market allowed it. His words painted the picture of a manager pushing for upgrades but forced to live with constant uncertainty.

“There are certain things that you can do, certain things that we don’t know if we can do,” he said. “Still we have four, five days, I’m sure if we can improve other areas, we will, but I don’t know how the market is going to finish. I have to be patient, the same as you. I want to know, believe me. It’s very uncomfortable for me. You are dealing with uncertainties all the time.”

Those uncertainties are now turning into concrete moves: Brughmans in goal, N'Guessan lined up for the future, and a winger hunt still very much alive.

If Liverpool land their wide targets to go with a £30m goalkeeper and a highly rated teenage striker, this once “quiet” window could end up defining Iraola’s first phase at Anfield.
