Liverpool's Clever Loan Move for Ronald Araujo

Liverpool’s loan move for Ronald Araujo has been hailed as a “very clever” piece of business, with Glen Johnson arguing the deal could effectively save the club up to $100 million.

The Barcelona captain has arrived at Anfield on a season-long loan at a time when Liverpool’s defensive options have been stretched thin. Joe Gomez has joined an injury list that already included Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley, forcing Andoni Iraola to act. Jeremy Jacquet is back in training and in line to feature in Sunday’s friendly double-header against Como, but the shortage at both center-back and right-back pushed Liverpool into the market.

They didn’t blink. They went for pedigree.

A big name, a low-risk deal

Under the agreement with Barcelona, Liverpool will pay Araujo’s wages and hold an option to buy him permanently at the end of the season for £47 million ($63 million). No obligation. No immediate fee. Just a year to see if one of Europe’s most coveted defenders truly fits the Premier League and Iraola’s demands.

By next summer, the picture at the back could look very different. Inside the club, there is a clear expectation that Jacquet, 21, and Leoni, 19, will have pushed themselves into regular first-team roles. That looming breakthrough is exactly why there is no guarantee Liverpool will trigger the option on Araujo, despite his status and reputation.

Johnson, though, sees the logic from every angle.

“Time will tell with the loan deal for Ronald Araujo, but I think it’s a very clever signing,” the former England right-back, who played 200 times for Liverpool between 2009 and 2016, told the Liverpool Echo on behalf of SeatPin.

“Liverpool could have quite easily gone out and dropped £50 million to £100 million ($67 million to $135 million) on a new center-back, but they’ve shrewdly signed a great player on loan.

“He looks like a top defender who could thrive in the physicality of the Premier League, but it doesn’t always work out that way.

“That’s why I think it’s such a great piece of business by Liverpool. If he turns out to be a great player, they can sign him permanently at the end of his loan. But to me, it’s a risk-free deal which provides them great cover in a position they are desperate to fill right now.

“I like the fact they haven’t panic-bought someone, they’ve plugged a gap in a sensible way.”

Van Dijk’s clock is ticking

Araujo’s arrival drops him straight into a fiercely competitive battle for places at the heart of Liverpool’s defence. He, Jacquet, Leoni and Gomez are all vying to line up alongside Virgil van Dijk, the club captain and the modern symbol of their backline.

Van Dijk turned 35 last month and is now into the final 12 months of his contract. His presence still anchors everything, but the timeline is clear. Liverpool are planning for what comes next while he is still there to guide the transition.

That succession plan is starting to take shape. Alongside Jacquet and Araujo, the club have also brought in winger Victor Munoz this summer. The rebuild is not just about the back four, though. Liverpool are still pushing to add more punch out wide, working on a significant deal with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola to strengthen their attacking flanks.

So the squad is being reshaped on the fly: a new defensive pillar on loan, young centre-backs growing into the shirt, a fresh winger in Munoz, and a potential marquee addition in Barcola still on the horizon.

All of it feeds into one hard deadline.

Liverpool open their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle on Sunday, August 23. By then, Iraola will want Araujo settled, the pecking order at the back clearer, and the new-look side ready to show whether this “risk-free” masterstroke really sets the tone for a new era at Anfield.
