Liverpool Negotiates Loan Move for Harvey Elliott
Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the clock ticks towards Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.
The 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several clubs throughout the summer, is now the subject of concrete negotiations with the La Liga side as they push to get a deal over the line before the 11pm cut-off on September 1.
Valencia are understood to be leading the race and Elliott has already spoken with head coach Carlos Corberan about how he would be used at Mestalla. The proposed move is a straight loan, but it could also pave the way for Liverpool to extend his contract to protect the value of the former England Under-21 international, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028.
Right now, Elliott finds himself on the outside at Anfield. He has yet to make a match-day squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola and is coming off a frustrating spell at Aston Villa, where he barely featured last season.
That campaign was complicated from the start. Elliott’s brief outing in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle a year ago meant he had already played for two clubs, blocking any further move in the January window. Villa, wary of triggering an obligation to buy, then managed his minutes carefully.
They were determined he would not reach the 10-game threshold that would have activated a permanent £35m transfer. As Unai Emery’s side marched to Europa League glory, Elliott stayed on the fringes, watching the story unfold rather than shaping it.
Back at Liverpool for the pre-season tour of the United States, the uncertainty hadn’t lifted. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, Elliott admitted he was wrestling with his next step.
“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."
Liverpool had expected Valencia to firm up their interest before the weekend. Those conversations have now moved into direct talks over a loan agreement as the Spanish club look to add creativity and energy to their attacking options.
Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already made 149 appearances in red. Now, with the deadline looming and a new era under Iraola taking shape, the next decision could define the trajectory of his Liverpool career.
