Liverpool Pursue €100m Leipzig Starlet Yan Diomande
Liverpool’s post-Mohamed Salah rebuild is beginning to take shape, and at the heart of it sits a 19-year-old winger who has lit up the Bundesliga. The club have made clear progress in talks with Yan Diomande’s representatives over a summer move from RB Leipzig to Anfield, with the teenager emerging as the preferred solution to a gaping hole on the right.
This is the first big attacking call of the Andoni Iraola era. And it is a bold one.
Iraola’s first marquee target
Liverpool’s hierarchy knew they would have to be aggressive this summer. A new manager, Salah gone after his contract was terminated early, and uncertainty hanging over Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo has left the wide areas exposed. One elite attacker, at the very least, is non-negotiable.
Iraola will have his own ideas, but the Diomande pursuit predates his arrival. Liverpool’s recruitment team have tracked the Leipzig forward closely and moved early, positioning him as their top attacking priority.
GIVEMESPORT understands talks with the player’s camp have advanced, with the Reds increasingly confident the winger wants Anfield as his next step.
A 19-year-old with heavyweight numbers
Diomande’s numbers in Germany demand attention. Twelve goals and nine assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig this season have pushed him into the top bracket of young attacking talents in Europe.
He is not just a prospect. He is already a difference-maker.
At 19, he has time on his side and a long contract tying him to Leipzig until 2030. That deal gives the German club enormous leverage. They have responded by slapping a price tag of at least €100 million (£87 million) on him and starting negotiations from there.
Inside Leipzig, there is still a push to extend his terms again, to lock him in even tighter at the Red Bull Arena. But those plans are on hold while Diomande is away on international duty at the World Cup, and that pause has opened a window Liverpool are trying to force their way through.
Leipzig play for time, Liverpool push for speed
The dynamic is clear. Liverpool want this done quickly. Leipzig want time.
GMS senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs described on the Market Madness podcast how the German club are handling the situation, joking that “Leipzig seem to be adding about a million a day” to Diomande’s asking price. Behind the joke lies a hard-nosed strategy.
According to Jacobs, Leipzig are inflating the fee while they wait for a definitive answer from the player on a new contract. Until Diomande makes that call, they intend to keep the valuation as high as possible, effectively slowing any potential transfer and buying breathing space.
Once the teenager finally says he is either staying or going, the picture changes. If he commits to Leipzig, the door closes and there is no move this summer. If he makes it clear he wants to leave, the overall package is expected to soften, at least slightly, as Leipzig shift from resistance to negotiation.
For now, Liverpool are working in that grey area, pushing on the player side while Leipzig hold their line.
Red Bull resistance – but a key relationship
Red Bull clubs have never been easy sellers. They negotiate hard, they sell on their terms, and they rarely blink first.
Liverpool, though, are not arriving at the table cold. The club enjoy a strong relationship with Diomande’s agency and with Leipzig themselves, and that has helped them move into a leading position in the race.
Jacobs has described Diomande as Liverpool’s “top choice, the number one choice”, and the club are said to be “relatively optimistic” that the winger wants to join, despite the player recently speaking publicly about his affection for PSG.
The message from within Anfield is clear: they believe he can be convinced to make Merseyside his next stage.
“Explosive” and still evolving
Diomande does not hide what he is about. Speaking to the Bundesliga’s official channels earlier this season, he called himself an “explosive” winger and broke his game down with striking clarity.
“My style is explosive, fast, and physically strong. Quick, agile, and also a finisher. I know I am not yet a perfect finisher, but I am only 19. With time, it will come – and I will become a killer in front of goal.”
That blend of raw power, acceleration and self-awareness is exactly what Liverpool’s forward line has thrived on in the past decade. Anfield has long been a stage for wide forwards who arrive as rough diamonds and leave as world-class finishers.
Diomande fits that mould. The question is whether Liverpool are prepared to pay Leipzig’s price to find out just how far he can go in red.
