Liverpool Reject £30m Bid for Trey Nyoni

Liverpool have drawn a firm line in the final days of the window: Trey Nyoni is not for sale.

Nottingham Forest tested that resolve with a £30million offer — £25m guaranteed and £5m in add-ons — for the 19-year-old midfielder, but Liverpool dismissed the proposal and made it clear there would be no negotiation before Tuesday’s deadline.

This is not a squad player being protected for the sake of numbers. Andoni Iraola has marked Nyoni out as part of his core plan for the season after the teenager’s sharp, fearless pre-season displays under the new head coach.

The stance is even more striking given Liverpool’s business earlier this month. Curtis Jones was allowed to leave for Inter in a £30m deal, a move that might normally trigger an immediate search for a replacement. Instead, Liverpool chose to hold their nerve. Inside the club, the belief is that Nyoni is ready to fill a far bigger role.

That faith has been building for a while. Nyoni signed a new long-term contract last summer, and his rapid progress over the past year means fresh talks over another extension are already expected. Liverpool see a player on the rise and want their commitment to match his trajectory.

Since arriving from Leicester City’s academy three years ago, Nyoni has made 21 senior appearances. The numbers are modest, but the impression is not. He offered another glimpse of his potential on Saturday, coming off the bench against Forest in a 2-2 draw at Anfield and catching the eye with his composure and energy.

“I’m very happy with Trey,” he said before the season kicked off. “He has been very good in pre-season, not only in the games, even when he trains with us he’s facing top-level players and he’s at the level. I have no doubts with Trey. He will be very valuable this season for us, hopefully plays a lot and gives the level that I’m seeing every day in training.”

The message is clear. While Forest search elsewhere before the window slams shut, Liverpool intend to build around Nyoni, not cash in on him.
