Liverpool Seek First Win as Ipswich Hosts Premier League Clash

They do, however, have problems to juggle. Jaden Philogene-Bidace is sidelined with an ankle injury, Azor Matusiwa is out with a muscle issue, Jack Taylor is nursing a knee problem and Florentino Luis remains a doubt. Striker Emersonn has also been managing a knee concern, though he starts tonight.

Liverpool unbeaten, but impatient

Injuries have not helped. Hugo Ekitike remains out with an Achilles problem. Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley are both missing with knee injuries. Joe Gomez is sidelined by a muscle issue and Federico Chiesa has a minor back complaint.

So Iraola turns to what he does have: a strong core, and a bench that now includes one of the most expensive signings in Liverpool’s history.

Liverpool finally landed the French winger from Paris Saint-Germain for £123m on the penultimate day of the transfer window, ending a summer-long chase. He has not played a competitive minute since the World Cup, but he has trained normally with his new teammates this week.

Iraola has been weighing risk against reward.

"It's a good question, it's a good question,” the Liverpool manager said when asked if Barcola would start. “I see him in a good place. He has trained with us in three trainings. It's true that he hasn't had minutes in pre-season but he has been training normal with the group. Then it's a decision we have to make.

"I think he's in a good place but we also have to consider that he hasn't had the minutes in the pre-season games."

The decision, for now, is to hold him back. Barcola is named among the substitutes, ready to be unleashed if the game demands a jolt of pace and invention from the bench.
