Liverpool Edges Closer to Signing Bradley Barcola from PSG

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola is finally moving towards the sharp end, with reports in France claiming a deal with PSG is edging closer.

Loïc Tanzi of L’Équipe reports that the France international is “expected to become the biggest transfer of a Ligue 1 player to a foreign club”, a line that underlines just how heavy this move would land on the European market.

Liverpool, already committed to strengthening their forward line with at least two attacking signings, have Barcola firmly on their list and are weighing up a third offensive recruit on top of that. The rebuild in the final third is not tentative. It’s aggressive.

PSG hold firm – but the price has dropped

The saga has dragged on, but the numbers are finally starting to move in Liverpool’s direction.

PSG are still digging in publicly. Tanzi reports that in recent hours the French champions have remained firm on their demand: €140m (£119.7m). That figure has been reiterated as the current line in the sand.

It’s still enormous. Yet it represents a clear drop from the earlier stages of negotiations, when Barcola’s valuation was understood to be closer to €170m (£145.3m). The climbdown is significant. It doesn’t make the deal cheap, but it does make it possible.

PSG’s revised stance now sits closer to the benchmark they have been watching in the Premier League, with Manchester City’s deal for Elliot Anderson (£116m) and Chelsea’s move for Morgan Rogers (£117m) serving as reference points in this summer’s market.

Within that context, €140m looks less like an outlier and more like a calculated play: a premium price, but one that can be justified in a window already inflated by English spending.

Barcola camp growing confident

Behind the scenes, the mood around the player is shifting.

The left-sided winger and his entourage are increasingly confident that an agreement with Liverpool will be reached. The expectation, as it stands, is that Barcola will end up at Anfield under Andoni Iraola.

It has taken time. A lot of it. But there is now a sense that the endgame is finally here.

Seven days, three signings, and a stretched squad

That endgame comes with a brutal clock.

Liverpool are staring at the final week of the window needing far more than one signature. The club want Barcola. They also want another wide option. And on top of that, a third attacker – almost certainly a centre-forward profile – is on the agenda.

Reports indicate Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Yankuba Minteh after a third bid, which would tick off one of those attacking needs. If Barcola follows, that leaves Richard Hughes and his recruitment team scrambling to land the final piece in a very tight time frame.

Seven days to deliver three attacking signings at the top end of the market. It’s a bold plan. It might be the only one available.

Iraola’s gamble in midfield and at right-back

While the forward line looks set for a major overhaul, the rest of the squad tells a different story.

Central midfield remains light. Right-back looks even more precarious. Jeremie Frimpong is the only established senior option on that flank, and there is no obvious, natural cover behind him.

Inside the club, there is clear faith in Iraola’s ability to patch the midfield with what he already has. The Basque coach believes he can solve Liverpool’s structural issues in the middle of the pitch with internal solutions rather than a marquee signing. That conviction will be tested quickly.

Right-back is harder to gloss over. One injury, one suspension, and the entire shape of the side could be forced into uncomfortable compromise.

A defining week ahead

Whatever happens with Barcola, Minteh and the elusive centre-forward, one reality is unavoidable: Liverpool are going to enter at least the first half of the 2026/27 season short in key areas.

The attack may yet be stacked. The rest of the squad will not be.

So the next seven days will not just define a transfer window. They will set the parameters of what Iraola can realistically chase this season – and how far Liverpool are willing to push to give him a squad that matches his ambition.
