Liverpool’s summer has been noisy without being especially busy. Three signings through the door, a dozen more names thrown at the wall, and still no one quite sure what the next decisive move will be.

The links keep coming. Ibrahim Mbaye. Bradley Barcola. Both admired. Both parked in a stalemate with Paris Saint-Germain, whose price tags sit miles away from Liverpool’s valuations. Talks have flickered, not burned. For now, nothing concrete.

While Liverpool wrestle with incomings, the real threat to their plans may be what happens at the exit door.

Inter’s midfield shuffle puts Curtis Jones in the spotlight

Curtis Jones is the Liverpool player most widely expected to move on this summer. His situation is simple and awkward: one year left on his Anfield deal, no active negotiations to extend, and a club that knows any fee now will fall short of his true value.

That price is precisely where everything is stuck. Liverpool want a fair number for a homegrown midfielder who has shown he can influence big games. Interested clubs see a contract ticking down and smell an opportunity.

Into this stand-off step Inter Milan and Newcastle United.

According to TEAMtalk, Inter have offered two of their midfielders to Newcastle: Davide Frattesi and Aleksandar Stankovic. The Italian champions are looking to clear space and raise funds, and the report states that this reshuffle is directly tied to their pursuit of Jones.

“Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi after also enquiring about highly-rated youngster Aleksandar Stankovic,” TEAMtalk report.

Newcastle, still adjusting after Bruno Guimaraes’ departure and having already missed out on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, are scanning the market for a new central presence.

Inter’s intermediaries, the report adds, have made Newcastle aware that Frattesi is available. The 26-year-old Italy international has been told he can leave this summer as Inter look to “make room for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, who they remain determined to bring to the San Siro.”

Frattesi is valued at around €30m (£26m / $35m). Juventus have shown interest, but Newcastle have now been informed he is on the market and the player is believed to be open to a move to England, having drawn Premier League attention before. Newcastle’s enquiries, TEAMtalk note, also extend to Stankovic.

If Newcastle take one of those options off Inter’s hands, the Italian side would be armed with both squad space and the money they need to go hard for Jones. That is where Liverpool’s carefully sketched transfer plan starts to wobble.

A departure that would punch a hole in Iraola’s plans

On paper, Liverpool’s midfield looks crowded. Names everywhere, options for every role. In reality, it is not that straightforward.

Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister both underwhelmed last season. Their form left question marks rather than answers, and the unit as a whole never felt fully settled. That is why Jones, with his blend of energy, control and tactical discipline, still feels important.

For Andoni Iraola, keeping him would be close to essential.

Jones fits the Spaniard’s aggressive, high-intensity style. He can press, carry the ball, and link phases of play in a way that suits a coach who wants his team to suffocate opponents and then break with purpose. With Iraola admitting his squad are not yet at peak fitness, he will lean heavily on his bench. That makes reliable, flexible midfielders even more valuable.

The problem? Jones’ own trust in the project has been shaken. The article notes he lost faith in the club after Arne Slot failed to use him last term. If a player feels sidelined, the promise of a new role under a new coach may not be enough to reverse that instinct to move on.

So Liverpool sit at a crossroads. Lose Jones now and they are almost compelled to dive back into a midfield market they had not planned to revisit. Keep him, and they must either find a way to convince him to sign fresh terms or risk watching a valuable asset walk away for nothing next year.

Inter are circling. Newcastle could unlock the funds that make their move possible. Liverpool, for all the noise about Mbaye and Barcola, may soon find that the most important transfer decision of their summer is not who arrives, but whether Curtis Jones is allowed to leave.
