Liverpool Urged to Consider Re-signing Trent Alexander-Arnold After Tough Spell at Real Madrid

Andy Townsend thinks Liverpool should take advantage of the uncertainty around Alexander-Arnold's future at the Bernabeu. Since his free transfer last summer, the 27-year-old’s time in Madrid hasn’t gone as planned, leading to suggestions he could make a positive impact if he returns to Liverpool.

Townsend told talkSPORT that from a purely footballing perspective, Alexander-Arnold’s return would boost Liverpool. He said, "I’ve not really got anyone like [Jeremie] Frimpong as a right back. These full backs are key to a team’s attack now. If you can’t deliver in good areas, that’s a problem. Trent can do that easily. So, yes, he would improve them." Townsend also noted the challenge for some fans to accept such a move, though.

Mourinho’s System Limits Alexander-Arnold's Playing Time

At Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho prefers a defensive approach for the right-back role, which clashes with Alexander-Arnold’s attacking style. Mourinho favors Denzel Dumfries, who fits better into his system. This puts Alexander-Arnold’s chances of starting regularly in jeopardy.

Townsend pointed out that Madrid’s squad depth in that position makes Alexander-Arnold less essential. He said, "They’ve signed Dumfries, who suits Mourinho's style more. They also have players like [Federico] Valverde offering cover. Trent will want to be sure he gets enough starts, especially at this point in pre-season."

A Challenging First Season in La Liga

The defender’s stats during his debut season in Spain were far below his peak performances at Liverpool. Injuries and constant managerial changes limited him to only 14 league starts, stopping him from gaining momentum.

Townsend believes a loan move back to Liverpool might be ideal to restore Alexander-Arnold’s confidence. "It must have been disappointing for him not to get going. If Liverpool could bring him back on loan, even for £5-10 million, that would be worth it," he said, emphasizing the player’s quality.
