Lucas Bergvall Signs New Tottenham Contract After Initial Exit Talk

Lucas Bergvall has performed a sharp U-turn at Tottenham, signing a new contract just three months after telling the club he wanted out.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder had pushed for a summer move, frustrated by limited minutes following Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival towards the end of last season. His situation alerted a string of Premier League rivals. Nottingham Forest tested Spurs’ resolve with a £38m bid that was rejected, while Aston Villa and Chelsea also circled.

Game time has remained scarce. Bergvall has played just 45 minutes of Premier League football for Spurs this season. Yet inside the club, the tone has changed. From exit talk to long-term commitment.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” Bergvall said after signing. The message was clear: he now sees his future in north London.

He set out his own demands as much as his ambitions.

“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

De Zerbi’s stance has been blunt from the start. In July, he called Bergvall “a top, top, top player” but refused to plead with him to stay, saying he would not try to convince anyone against their wishes.

The Italian also held his hands up over last season’s chaos, when Spurs only narrowly escaped relegation and Bergvall’s development stalled. He admitted he had made mistakes in his handling of the youngster during that turbulent run-in.

Now the tone is different from the head coach as well.

Speaking after Bergvall committed his future, De Zerbi said: “I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

The contract is signed. The faith has been stated publicly. The question now is whether Bergvall can turn that renewed trust into a permanent place at the heart of De Zerbi’s Tottenham.
