Lucas Herrington Transfers to Hull City for Record Fee

Colorado Rapids have cashed in on their brightest young star, sending defender Lucas Herrington to Premier League side Hull City in a club-record transfer that also rewrites the MLS history books.

The 18-year-old Australian international moves for a fee reportedly rising to $23 million – $17 million guaranteed – with a sell-on clause included. No MLS defender has ever left the league for more.

From bargain buy to record sale

Colorado signed Herrington in August 2025 on a pre-contract from A-League outfit Brisbane Roar FC, reportedly for under $1 million. Less than a year later, that deal looks like one of the great pieces of business in club history.

The center back’s rise has been sharp and relentless. He broke into the Rapids’ lineup, earned a 2026 MLS All-Star nod, then stepped onto the biggest stage of all with two appearances for the Socceroos at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This season, he’s logged 20 games for Colorado, contributing 1 goal and 1 assist from the heart of defense.

“Lucas is a special talent whose elite mentality and character match his outstanding ability on the field,” Smith said, adding that the club is “incredibly proud” of what Herrington achieved in Colorado and “excited for him as he takes this next step in his career.”

For Smith, Herrington is the poster boy for the Rapids’ strategy: identify, recruit, and develop top young talent from all markets, help them win in MLS, and create a pathway to the highest level. “Lucas is a wonderful example of that approach,” he said, as the club sent him on his way to England.

A teenager’s leap of faith

Herrington’s own words tell the story of how far he has come, and how quickly.

“When I landed in Colorado in January, I had left Australia for the first time to come across the world and chase a dream. The Rapids and their fans took a chance on me and made me feel at home from day one,” he said.

He reserved thanks for his family, his teammates, head coach Matt Wells and Smith “for believing in me, supporting my growth and giving me the opportunity to take the next steps in my career.”

Then came a message to the supporters who watched him grow into a record sale.

“To the fans: thank you for embracing a kid from Brisbane as one of your own. Colorado has given me so much, and I’ll always be proud to have been a Rapid. I’m excited for what comes next, but I’ll never forget my time here. Thank you.”

Hull’s Premier League return gets a statement signing

Herrington now walks into a club on the rise. Hull City are back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season, having earned promotion by beating Middlesbrough in the 2025-26 EFL Championship playoff final.

A record MLS fee for a defender, an 18-year-old World Cup participant, and a newly promoted side needing to harden its back line – the move underlines Hull’s intent to do more than just survive.

For Colorado, the timing cuts both ways. They are in their first season under head coach Matt Wells, the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant tasked with reshaping the Rapids. The team sits 11th in the Western Conference, two points off the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs line on 22 points.

They now have a major influx of cash, a clear proof of concept for their development model, and a significant hole to fill in central defense. How they spend that record windfall – and how quickly they can replace Herrington’s presence at the back – will go a long way in deciding whether this season becomes a launchpad or a missed opportunity.
