Lucas Torreira Attacked in Istanbul Shopping Centre

Lucas Torreira, the former Arsenal midfielder now starring for Galatasaray, has filed a criminal complaint after being punched in what police are treating as a targeted attack at an Istanbul shopping centre.

The 28-year-old was struck outside a cafe in the Beyoğlu district, in the Camiikebir neighbourhood, suffering grazes around his left eye. Officers moved in quickly, detaining a man who allegedly tried to jump into a taxi and escape the scene.

This was not a random confrontation. As the investigation unfolded, authorities established that the suspect already had a criminal record and, crucially, that a restraining order was in force against him at the time of the assault. Police sources also confirmed that the same individual had previously posted threatening messages aimed specifically at Torreira, according to Turkish outlet Haberler.

The Uruguayan has pressed charges and is pushing the case through formal channels, underlining the seriousness with which he and the authorities are treating the incident.

Career in Istanbul

Torreira has rebuilt his career in Istanbul since leaving Arsenal in 2022, becoming a central figure in a Galatasaray side that has dominated domestically. He arrived in Turkey after slipping down the pecking order in north London, where his early impact under Unai Emery gradually faded following the arrival of Mikel Arteta.

Signed from Sampdoria in 2018, Torreira won over Arsenal supporters with his combative edge and relentless work-rate, capped by a goal in the memorable 4-2 north London derby win over Tottenham. But as the club’s direction shifted, so did his role. Loan spells at Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina followed, before he chose to make a permanent break.

The move to Galatasaray, he explained at the time, was driven by the need for regular football and a clear path into Uruguay’s World Cup plans. “I had to have continuity for the World Cup. So that’s why I decided to go to Turkey and Galatasaray,” he said then, adding that the club’s project and the influence of compatriot and Gala goalkeeper Fernando Muslera helped seal the decision.

Since landing in Istanbul, Torreira has become a title-winner again, anchoring midfield for a Galatasaray side that has lifted the Super Lig crown in each of his seasons at the club.

Now his focus briefly shifts from the pitch to the courtroom, after an attack that started online and spilled into a public space in broad daylight.
