Malard Shines on Chelsea Debut in Champions League Victory

Melvine Malard needed just 12 minutes to turn a tight European tie into a statement win.

The France forward, a summer signing from Manchester United for about £850,000, came off the bench on her Chelsea debut and struck twice in a ruthless second-half display as the Blues beat Real Sociedad 5-2 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round at Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Chelsea now stand within touching distance of the tournament proper. The manner of this win will echo beyond the scoreline.

Shock Start, Swift Response

Sonia Bompastor’s first competitive game in charge could hardly have started worse.

Seven minutes in, Ainhoa Marin silenced the home crowd. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, she opened her body and curled a superb strike into the top corner, giving Sociedad an early 1-0 lead and Chelsea an instant reminder of European jeopardy.

The Blues, though, steadied. Possession grew, pressure mounted, and on the half-hour the captain dragged them level.

Naomi Girma, wearing the armband, met a corner from another new arrival, Katie McCabe, and powered her header home. One set piece, one response, 1-1, and Chelsea were back on script.

Set-Piece Strength, Sudden Setback

After the break, Chelsea began to look like themselves.

Early in the second half, Lauren James swung in another dangerous corner. Dutch defender Veerle Buurman rose highest and buried her header, flipping the game on its head and putting Chelsea 2-1 in front.

The momentum seemed to be theirs. Then it slipped.

Sociedad refused to fold and found an equaliser through Cecilia Marcos, levelling the tie at 2-2 and puncturing the sense of control Bompastor’s side had worked to build.

That was the cue for a change. And for Malard.

Malard Takes Over

Introduced in the 55th minute with the game finely poised, Malard wasted no time announcing herself.

Just 12 minutes after stepping onto the pitch, she latched onto a precise through ball from Sjoeke Nüsken. One touch took her around goalkeeper Julia Arrula, the next rolled the ball into an empty net. Simple finish, huge impact. Chelsea were 3-2 up and suddenly playing with a different edge.

The pressure finally told again as James added her name to the scoresheet, stretching the lead and tightening Chelsea’s grip on the tie. Sociedad, who had twice hauled themselves level, were now chasing shadows.

Malard wasn’t done. In the 88th minute, Ellie Carpenter surged down the flank and drilled a low cross into the box. Malard arrived in the right place at the right time, tapping in her second and Chelsea’s fifth to cap a stunning debut and close out a 5-2 victory.

From 2-2 to 5-2, the French forward had ripped the contest away from the visitors.

Big Week Ahead for Bompastor’s Chelsea

Chelsea, who finished third in the Women’s Super League last season, will take that three-goal cushion to Spain for the second leg on Wednesday, 2 September (18:00 BST), with a place in the Champions League league phase firmly in their hands.

Three days later, the Blues launch their WSL campaign against Aston Villa, with a new rhythm to their season. Domestic cup and European home fixtures will be staged at Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium, while all WSL home games move to Stamford Bridge.

One debut, two goals, a five-goal salvo and a commanding first-leg lead: under Bompastor, Chelsea’s new era has started with a statement.
