Mamelodi Sundowns Claim Late Victory Against Golden Arrows

Mamelodi Sundowns left it late, but they left with everything that mattered.

A thumping 88th‑minute strike from Teboho Mokoena snatched a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium, preserving their perfect start and stretching their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership.

For long spells, it looked like two points slipping away.

Late drama, ruthless finish

Sundowns’ new signing Siyanda Ndlovu had marked his league outing with a composed first-half finish, putting the Brazilians in front and seemingly in control. The Tshwane side moved the ball with authority, probing, waiting, wearing Arrows down.

Cardoso hails character – and sounds a warning

Miguel Cardoso did not hide his admiration for his players’ response after conceding.

“I’m obviously happy with the character we’ve shown because sometimes if you concede a goal like that, you don’t have the mental capacity to be resilient and to fight for something,” the Sundowns coach said.

For him, the comeback said as much about the dressing room as the scoreboard.

“So it means that the message, the character and attitude we’re trying to build is strong. No one can destroy the attitude and that is something that we have to state all the time.

“It will not obviously happen every time that we score in the last minute but if we believe, it will happen more frequently and the team showed belief.”

Belief, though, is only part of the package Cardoso wants.

Winning – but still learning

Despite the three points and a four-match winning streak across all competitions, the coach was visibly irritated by how his side handled the closing stages after regaining the lead.

“What I didn’t like is that after we scored the two one we still went to go attack like it was the last minute of the match and we were losing by two goals,” he said.

Sundowns chased a third when game management was the smarter option.

“But we needed to have the maturity at that point to manage the game and keep the ball in the right places to finish the game in the few minutes that were remaining. There’s obviously some learning to do from this match so that we can become stronger in the future.”

The message is clear: standards at Sundowns are set higher than the league table alone.

They sit top, they keep winning, and they have just added an ex-Orlando Pirates defender to deepen an already powerful squad. On Wednesday, Siwelele FC arrive at Loftus Versfeld, where Cardoso will demand not just another victory, but the kind of maturity that turns late escapes into routine, controlled wins.
