Man City Prepares Bid for Enzo Fernandez Amid Chelsea Turmoil

Manchester City are preparing an opening offer for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, as Enzo Maresca pushes hard to reshape his midfield before the window slams shut next week.

The Argentina international has been marked out by the City manager as a priority signing after a summer of heavyweight departures from the Etihad. City have already lost four senior midfielders and, with the deadline looming, the club’s recruitment is now racing the clock.

Chelsea know exactly how much they want. Earlier in the summer, they set an unofficial cut-off date for any deal and made it clear they would not listen to offers below £120m. That date came and went without agreement, but the story hasn’t died. City are expected to come back again for the 25-year-old in the coming days.

If they strike a deal, Fernandez would move into the top bracket of Premier League transfers, behind only Liverpool’s £125m signing of Alexander Isak last summer. City themselves are already operating in that financial stratosphere: they paid £116m to bring Elliot Anderson in from Nottingham Forest earlier in this window. Landing Fernandez would mean breaking their own transfer record for a second time in the same summer.

Maresca’s interest is not built on scouting reports alone. He and Fernandez maintain a positive relationship from their time together at Chelsea, before Maresca’s controversial New Year’s Day exit and swift move to the Etihad in June. The Italian now wants the World Cup winner at the heart of his rebuild.

City's Need

City’s need is obvious. Tijjani Reijnders has gone to Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia for £52m. Rodri has joined Barcelona in a £65m move. Newcastle have agreed a £52m deal for Nico Gonzalez. Bernardo Silva left earlier in the summer before completing his switch to Real Madrid. That cluster of exits has ripped out the core of a midfield that powered City’s recent success.

Fernandez's Chelsea Career

Across London, Fernandez’s Chelsea career has been anything but calm. Signed from Benfica for £107m in 2023, he arrived as a centrepiece of the club’s new era. Since then, the mood has darkened. Alongside his agent, former Paris St-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore, Fernandez explored interest from Real Madrid, only for the Spanish giants to publicly deny any attempt to sign him.

Tension really escalated after Chelsea’s Champions League elimination against PSG in March. In the aftermath of that defeat, Fernandez became increasingly critical of the club, and the relationship with sections of the fanbase has frayed.
