Man City vs Coventry: Enzo Fernandez's Etihad Debut and Maresca's Selection Dilemma

Manchester City have spent like a club in a hurry. Now comes the hard part: making it all make sense.

Deadline Day delivered a stunning triple move – Enzo Fernandez, Iliman Ndiaye and Ayyoub Bouaddi all through the door – and with it, a squad suddenly swollen with options and headaches. Coventry arrive at the Etihad on Saturday, but the real scrutiny will fall on Enzo Maresca and how he pieces this together.

Enzo Fernandez: Straight Into the Fire

There is no mystery about the main attraction. Fernandez, signed for a British transfer record-equalling £125m, is expected to walk straight into the starting XI and straight into the heart of City’s midfield.

This is the signing that changes the geometry of the team.

Marc Guehi’s brief stint as an emergency defensive midfielder looks done. It served a purpose, gave Maresca a stopgap solution, but with Fernandez available, City can restore a more natural structure in the middle of the pitch. Elliot Anderson is the likeliest partner, offering legs, balance and a platform for Fernandez to dictate.

Once that axis drops into place, the dominoes start to fall higher up.

Squeeze in the Final Third

Competition was the plan. Now it’s real.

Rayan Cherki has opened the season sharply. Phil Foden is still one of the club’s crown jewels. Neither can feel remotely comfortable about their place. Fernandez’s arrival tightens the space for passengers; every attacking midfield berth suddenly feels expensive.

Ndiaye, a deal worth up to £65m, may have to watch the early stages from the bench. The same goes for Bouaddi, who cost £86m and faces an immediate fight just to get on the pitch. When a club spends at this level, reputations and fees don’t guarantee minutes. They only raise the stakes.

Defence Finally Settling

Behind them, at least, the picture looks clearer.

Abdukodir Khusanov is set to start on the right of the back line, with Ruben Dias and Guehi forming the central partnership and Josko Gvardiol continuing on the left. For a side that has shuffled and improvised through the early weeks, that kind of continuity matters.

Coventry will come looking for cracks. City can’t afford to hand them any.

Injuries and the Likely XI

Matheus Nunes remains a doubt, his fitness still not fully convincing. Jeremy Doku is definitely out, still recovering from the calf injury picked up against Arsenal in the Community Shield.
