Manchester City Eyes Enzo Fernández Amid Chelsea's High Demands

Manchester City’s interest in Enzo Fernández is still burning – but prising him out of Chelsea now looks like one of the toughest deals of the window.

Rodri’s move from City to Barcelona has gone through, and that departure has kept the Fernández rumours alive around the Etihad. City have tracked the Argentina international all summer, seeing him as a potential pillar of a rebuilt midfield.

The problem is the price.

Chelsea have been clear: they wanted £120m earlier in the window. That figure alone cooled City’s intentions, even with their financial muscle. The London club also briefed that last Friday was a “deadline” for any offers, a line drawn in the sand to try and bring clarity to their own planning.

That line has not scared City away.

According to Ben Jacobs, the Premier League champions are still “prepared to bid” for Fernández as they hunt two midfield signings before the window shuts. The need is obvious after Rodri’s exit. The timing is not in their favour.

Chelsea’s stance has shifted in only one direction. With their self-imposed deadline gone, any late move for their former Benfica midfielder will come at an even higher premium than the already eye-watering £120m. Selling now would leave Chelsea scrambling for a replacement with the clock ticking, and they know they would likely be the ones forced to overpay.

So they want City to carry that burden instead.

If a bid does arrive, it will have to be enormous to even start the conversation at Stamford Bridge. City’s hierarchy must decide how far they are willing to go for a player Chelsea have no real incentive to lose this late in the summer.

Current Situation

The stage is set: a restless champion needing midfield reinforcements, a rival club holding a prized asset and all the leverage, and a transfer market that has already shown it can explode without warning. With the window running down, this saga is poised either to fizzle out quietly or ignite into one of the defining stories of the summer.
