Manchester City Nears Enzo Fernandez Agreement as Deadline Approaches

Manchester City have struck an initial agreement with Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez, with the World Cup-winning midfielder now racing the clock to seal a dramatic deadline-day move to the Etihad.

British outlet The Sun reports that City finally moved from admiration to action on Monday, opening direct talks with their Premier League rivals over the 25-year-old. The negotiations have accelerated quickly, and the deal is now moving towards completion in the final hours of the window.

The timing could hardly be tighter. Fernandez must have every form signed and every test passed before the window shuts at 11pm local time today. One delay, one snag, and the whole move could collapse.

What awaits him in Manchester is a reunion. Enzo Maresca, the coach Fernandez publicly backed during his turbulent Chelsea exit, is now in the City dugout after replacing Pep Guardiola in the summer. The prospect of working again under a manager whose methods he openly praised has been a key thread in this story.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that City and Chelsea have reached an initial agreement, clearing the way for the next step. Fernandez is now waiting for the go-ahead to undergo his medical, the final major hurdle before he can be unveiled in sky blue.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have kept their cards close to their chest. Xabi Alonso left Fernandez out of the squad for Sunday’s clash with Brighton, a decision that only fuelled speculation over the midfielder’s future.

Pressed on whether Fernandez had already played his last game for the club, Alonso refused to offer a definitive answer.

"We'll see. We want what's best for the team, which is why we made the decision against Luton and today, and anything that happens before Tuesday evening, we need to be aware of how things will develop," he said.

The Spaniard stressed that Chelsea are braced for late movement in the market.

"We're not sure, we're preparing for all scenarios, but I'm certain that whatever happens from Wednesday, we'll have a good enough squad to compete in all the Premier League matches."

This is not a cold, opportunistic move from City. There is history and emotion wrapped around it.

Back in January, when Chelsea sacked Maresca, Fernandez did not hide his anger at the decision.

"I don't understand it," he told Mexican network TUDN. "Sometimes there are things we don't understand as players, and how and in what way they try to manage matters."

He described Maresca’s departure as a painful rupture.

"Clearly it was a departure that hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, as it cuts everything off suddenly."

For Fernandez, Maresca was more than just another coach.

"We had an identity. He gave us a system, although according to the nature of football, things are sometimes good and sometimes bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing," he said.

Now, as the clock winds down on the window, that identity could be rebuilt in Manchester, with Fernandez at the heart of Maresca’s midfield once again — if the paperwork beats the deadline.
