Manchester City Eye Enzo Fernandez Amid Chelsea's Deadline

Manchester City have already ripped up this summer’s transfer script once. They might be about to do it again.

After dropping £116 million on Elliot Anderson – a fee that briefly made him the most expensive British player in history – City are still not done shaping their midfield for life after Pep Guardiola. Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi is on their radar, with another potential nine-figure deal being weighed up. The spending is heavy. The intent is clear.

Now comes the next big swing: Enzo Fernandez.

City circle as Chelsea set the clock

With Rodri’s long-term future the subject of growing speculation in Spain, and talk of Barcelona or Real Madrid circling the Ballon d’Or winner refusing to go away, City are bracing for a possible reshuffle at the heart of their side. That uncertainty has pushed Fernandez towards the top of their list.

The Manchester club have emerged as frontrunners to pull the Argentina international away from Stamford Bridge, sensing an opportunity as Chelsea reshape under Xabi Alonso. But there is a catch. A deadline.

Chelsea are understood to have set August 14 as the cut-off for any formal approach and serious talks. If City want Fernandez, they cannot drift into this one. They have to move, and quickly.

Hendry: “It makes sense for City”

Former City defender Colin Hendry believes the move fits the new era at the Etihad, especially with Enzo’s familiarity with Enzo Maresca from their time together in west London.

Speaking to GOAL via Gambler Media, Hendry said: “Yeah, with what they're trying to replace it does make sense, obviously from the fact that he's come into the Prem and done really really well with Chelsea, or you know as much as you regard how much Chelsea's done. It would be a good addition.

“It's a fair old squad City's getting there now as well, but then again all the teams that are actually challenging for the big prizes have got enormous squads with talent and quality all over the place.”

The numbers, of course, will be huge. Fernandez cost Chelsea a fortune when he arrived from Benfica in January 2023, and that investment will not be written off lightly.

“He's going to be expensive isn't he,” Hendry continued, “but then again everything's expensive these days because it's not in tens of million, it's now coming into hundreds of million and it's crazy. But that's the way the game's gone for a bit and it's going to continue like that until I don't know, you bring back the three or four foreigner rule. I don't know, I thought I'd throw that one in because that's been there before. But I think it'd be a good addition for City.”

Filling the De Bruyne–Gundogan void

City’s midfield has lost something subtle but crucial since Kevin De Bruyne’s influence began to wane and Ilkay Gundogan moved on. Goals from central areas. Those late runs, those double-figure returns that tilt tight title races.

Fernandez is seen as the kind of all-action midfielder who can help restore that threat from deep.

“It has been an issue if I'm being really honest because you need to weigh in with goals from most parts of the team,” Hendry admitted.

“With the exception of the big man up front, [Erling] Haaland and the amount of goals he scores, but he has been ably supplied with the chances. That's another addition, if he can produce, that can weigh in with 10 goals. If he can hit double figures, then it's a big plus for City.”

That is the calculation at the Etihad: keep Haaland fed, spread the scoring burden, and make sure the midfield still bites at both ends of the pitch in a post-Guardiola landscape.

No problem on wages – but Chelsea dig in

On the player’s side, there is little sense of a hurdle. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue. At 25, established in the Premier League and already on around £180,000 a week at Chelsea, Fernandez would likely earn a rise if he traded blue for sky blue.

The real resistance sits in west London.

Chelsea, now under Alonso’s command, do not want to lose one of their marquee assets to a direct Premier League rival. They are reluctant sellers and fully aware that City, flush with cash and intent, are one of the few clubs capable of meeting their demands.

So the picture is stark. City’s midfield is being rebuilt, the clock on Chelsea’s deadline is ticking, and Fernandez stands at the crossroads between two superclubs.

If the Premier League’s balance of power is going to tilt again this summer, it may hinge on whether City decide that one more enormous cheque is worth writing.
