Manchester City Re-sign Gerónimo Rulli for Goalkeeping Role

Manchester City have turned to a familiar name to reshape their goalkeeping department, re-signing Argentina international Gerónimo Rulli from Marseille on a two-year deal.

The 34-year-old has put pen to paper on a contract running until June 2028, with City paying around £1.7m to secure his return to the Etihad Stadium. He will take the No.28 shirt and effectively steps into the role vacated by James Trafford, who has joined Leeds.

Rulli’s name has been on City’s books before. He spent the 2016/17 season with the club, but that first spell passed quietly, without a single first-team appearance. This time he comes back as a seasoned campaigner, not a project.

Since leaving England, the Argentine has built a heavyweight résumé across Europe. Spells at Real Sociedad, Montpellier, Villarreal, Ajax and most recently Marseille have hardened him into a reliable, battle-tested presence, comfortable in high-stakes environments and hostile arenas.

On the international stage, Rulli has collected eight caps for Argentina and travelled with Lionel Scaloni’s squad for the biggest nights of all. He was part of the groups that lifted the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América, adding two of the game’s most coveted medals to his collection.

English fans, though, will most vividly recall him in yellow rather than sky blue. In 2021, Rulli stood at the heart of Villarreal’s Europa League final triumph over Manchester United, a dramatic night that underlined his nerve under pressure and etched his name into the competition’s history.

Now he returns to Manchester with that experience behind him, asked to anchor City’s goalkeeping depth for the next phase of their pursuit of trophies on all fronts.
