Manchester City Sign Ayyoub Bouaddi for €95m in Midfield Rebuild

Manchester City have launched the next phase of their midfield rebuild with the signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille in a deal worth €95m (£81.4m) plus a further €5m in add-ons, handing the 18-year-old a five-year contract.

The Morocco international will not be eased in. He goes straight into Enzo Maresca’s squad for Friday night’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace, a measure of both his reputation and City’s need after a summer of upheaval in the middle of the pitch.

City rip up and restart the midfield

Bouaddi arrives as the latest pillar of a rapidly reconstructed engine room. Nico González is set to join Newcastle for £52m, becoming the fourth key central midfielder to leave the champions in this window after Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders.

City have already spent £116m on Elliott Anderson from Nottingham Forest and are preparing a move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández, with the London club valuing the World Cup winner at £120m. Bouaddi, primarily a No 6, is expected to anchor that new-look unit.

His rise has been fast and unforgiving. He became Lille’s youngest-ever player when he featured against KÍ Klaksvík on 5 October 2023, just three days after his 16th birthday, and went on to make 96 appearances for the French side before City pounced.

“I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much,” Bouaddi said after signing. “This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that. This club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title.”

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, left no doubt about the scale of their belief in him. “Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high – a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs. At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo.”

Marmoush and Sávio out, Allan Elias in

While City reshape the middle, their attack is being quietly retooled as well. Omar Marmoush is heading for Tottenham on loan with an obligation to buy next summer for an initial £50m. Spurs have agreed up to £10m in add-ons, half of which are guaranteed, and the Egyptian forward is due to undergo a medical before signing a four-year deal with an option for a fifth at the end of the season-long loan.

City will not owe a sell-on fee to Eintracht Frankfurt, the club they signed Marmoush from in January 2025. His departure follows that of Sávio, who completed a £75m move to Spurs on Tuesday, with a further £10m in potential add-ons.

City have already lined up Sávio’s replacement, agreeing a £34m fee with Palmeiras for Allan Elias, who will come in as a wide forward.

Spurs’ “bomba” takes shape

On the other side of the deal, Tottenham are arming Roberto De Zerbi with the firepower he has been demanding. The Italian has been open about his desire to upgrade at centre-forward, with Dominic Solanke and Richarlison struggling for form and fitness. Marmoush is the man identified to raise that level.

De Zerbi hinted at something big at the end of July, promising a “bomba” attacking signing – a top-tier addition. In the end he has two. Marmoush joins Sávio in a revamped frontline that has taken time to assemble. De Zerbi revealed on Tuesday that negotiations for Sávio began just three days after last season ended, a long pursuit he believes will pay off once the campaign settles into rhythm.

Spurs have been one of the most aggressive clubs in the market. Their summer outlay has reached £304.5m on Jan Paul van Hecke, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Sávio, with Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi arriving on free transfers.

City, meanwhile, walk into the new season with a teenage pivot at the heart of a rebuilt midfield and a major bid brewing for Enzo Fernández. For a club that measures success only in silverware, the question is simple: has this overhaul raised the ceiling, or just raised the stakes?
