Enzo Maresca has not tiptoed into this job. City have already thrown £116 million at Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, a statement in itself, and are closing in on Lille’s 18‑year‑old Ayyoub Bouaddi for around £86m.

That business alone would mark a major reshaping of the champions’ midfield. Yet, according to former City financial adviser Stefan Borson, Maresca wants more. Specifically, he wants a like-for-like successor to the No.16 if Rodri walks away this summer – and that is “above and beyond” the Bouaddi deal, which he still expects to happen.

The pressure in the market is obvious. City want to buy. City want to sell. And they want to do both quickly.

Enzo on the radar – and under the microscope

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez sits right at the heart of it.

The 25‑year‑old World Cup winner remains one of the most expensive midfielders on the planet, and Chelsea have set the tone: it is widely understood they want around £120m to even consider letting him go. Real Madrid are watching from Spain, but City’s interest has a different edge.

Maresca knows Fernandez. The connection is there, and with Rodri’s situation sharpening by the day, those Etihad links are not fading. They are hardening.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson put it bluntly: there is “a question mark” over whether Fernandez leaves Stamford Bridge, and if he does, whether that move is straight into Rodri’s role at City.

Chelsea, he believes, will also be busy right up to the window’s close. Fernandez, he suggests, sits at the centre of what would be “an enormous transaction.”

City’s deadline: the Community Shield

Inside City’s corridors, timing is everything.

Borson expects the club to draw a hard line over Rodri’s future. The internal stance he outlines is clear: bring a serious offer before the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday, 16 August, or forget it until next year.

If Rodri goes, the dominoes fall. Only then, Borson argues, will Maresca’s side truly move for Fernandez.

The logic is ruthless. First, secure clarity on the man who has defined City’s midfield for years. Then, and only then, commit nine figures to his successor.

Chelsea’s own Enzo dilemma

At Stamford Bridge, the picture is no less complicated.

Fernandez arrived as a marquee signing and has carried the weight of that fee ever since. Borson has previously suggested Chelsea are “looking to get rid” and even called him “a liability” in the context of their financial and squad planning, a brutal assessment of a player still in his mid‑twenties.

Yet the numbers from last season tell a different story on the pitch: 16 goals and 10 assists in 61 games for Chelsea. For a midfielder, that is elite production. For City, that is exactly the kind of output that turns a good side into a terrifying one.

There is another angle too. After the World Cup, after the upheaval and expectation, Fernandez may be tempted to “throw the towel in” at Chelsea, as Borson puts it, and look for a fresh start. The Etihad, with Maresca reshaping a title-winning machine, would be some reset.

A defining call in City’s new era

Strip it back and the situation is stark.

All signs, as Borson sees them, currently point towards Rodri leaving this summer. If that happens, City will not simply patch the gap. They will swing for another cornerstone.

Fernandez, Chelsea’s No.8, sits right in their sights: expensive, divisive, but undeniably gifted.

City have set their internal clock to the Community Shield. By the time they walk out to face Arsenal, they want the Rodri question answered.
