Manchester City Target Lille Star Ayyoub Bouaddi
Manchester City are closing in on what looks set to be one of next summer’s headline transfers, with talks progressing for Lille’s teenage sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The 18-year-old midfielder exploded onto the global stage at this summer’s World Cup, starting in all but one of Morocco’s matches as they powered their way to the quarter-finals. His rise has been so sharp it almost feels compressed: from late international debutant to tournament mainstay in a matter of weeks.
That surge followed an outstanding club season with Lille. Bouaddi helped drive the French side to third place in Ligue 1, securing a Champions League return and, in the process, turning himself into one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe.
Now City are pushing hardest.
City at the front of the queue
New Lille head coach Davide Ancelotti has confirmed what many around the game already suspected: negotiations are underway, and the Premier League champions are firmly in the mix.
“Of course, there are negotiations. Many clubs are interested in him,” Ancelotti told Ouest France, acknowledging the level of attention Bouaddi has generated since the World Cup.
The interest comes at a price. A fee of around €100m (£85.5m) has been floated as the figure that could unlock the deal. For an 18-year-old, it is a staggering number. For a club like City, it is the going rate for a player they believe can anchor their midfield for the next decade.
Ancelotti’s dilemma
Ancelotti, who took charge at Lille earlier in the summer after Bruno Genesio’s move to Marseille, finds himself trying to prepare for a new season while his brightest talent sits in the shop window.
Bouaddi played only 45 minutes in Lille’s friendly against Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, a decision that immediately sparked speculation in France that the club were protecting an asset on the verge of a move.
The Italian pushed back on that narrative, at least in public.
“He is a very, very good player and I hope he will stay with us,” Ancelotti said. “The season starts next week and I consider him a player at my disposal.”
On the reduced minutes, he was clear: “He was physically ready to play and he did play 45 minutes – but that’s only because I have to manage his playing time.”
Whether that was squad management or risk management is the question hanging over Lille’s final days of pre-season.
A decision looming
Lille open their Ligue 1 campaign with a trip to Angers on Sunday afternoon. For now, Ancelotti insists he is planning with Bouaddi in his team.
City, though, are circling. The negotiations are real, the price is set, and Europe’s breakout World Cup midfielder stands on the edge of the next step in his rapid rise.
Will he walk out in Lille colours at Angers, or is that stage about to belong to someone else?
