Manchester United's 25-Man Premier League Squad Overview

Manchester United have locked in their 25-man senior squad for the 2026-27 Premier League season – and the document tells only half the story.

League rules are tight. Clubs can register no more than 25 senior players, and only 17 of those are allowed to fall outside the ‘homegrown’ category. To count as homegrown, a player must have spent three full seasons registered with a club in England or Wales before turning 21.

United have hit the numbers cleanly. Eight homegrown players are in: Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount headline that group, backed up by four more who meet the same criteria. Around them sit 15 non-homegrown names, completing Michael Carrick’s official senior list.

On first glance, though, one omission jumps off the page.

Mainoo missing – but there’s no drama

Kobbie Mainoo does not appear in United’s 25-man squad. For a player who finished last season at the heart of Carrick’s plans, that looks jarring.

It isn’t.

Mainoo’s absence is purely administrative. Born after the start of 2005, he qualifies as an Under-21 player this season, which means he does not need to be registered in the main Premier League squad at all. Under-21s are automatically eligible to play in the competition, regardless of whether they appear on the senior list.

So there is no selection hint here, no hidden injury, no internal row. Just a rulebook quirk.

The same applies to Leny Yoro. The defender turns 21 in November but still falls under the Under-21 umbrella for registration purposes, so he too is left off the 25 without any impact on his availability.

Both can feature every week if Carrick chooses. The paperwork will not hold them back.

Beyond Mainoo and Yoro, United’s Under-21 pool is stacked with potential and, in some cases, a realistic pathway into Carrick’s matchday squads.

all sit on the U-21 list and are eligible to be called into Premier League action at any point. No extra registration, no mid-season reshuffle required.

Supporters inside Old Trafford will keep a particularly close eye on Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, who is edging towards a step up and has already built a reputation as one to monitor closely. New arrival Cristian Orozco joins him in that bracket as another highly rated prospect with first-team talk already swirling around his name.

There is a strong family thread running through the academy, too. Kai Rooney, son of club legend Wayne Rooney, is now officially classified as an Under-21 player for the first time after becoming a first-year scholar over the summer. On the same ladder, Jacey Carrick – Michael Carrick’s son – has also begun his apprenticeship.

The senior squad list might be capped at 25, but United’s season will lean heavily on a group far bigger, younger and hungrier than any sheet of paper can show.
