Manchester United Eye Alejandro Balde Amid Barcelona Exit Talks

Manchester United are closely tracking Alejandro Balde’s situation at Barcelona after the Catalan club authorised his agent, Jorge Mendes, to actively seek a new destination for the left-back.

The 22-year-old’s future at Barça has reached a critical phase. He was left out of the squad for Sunday night’s trip to Elche at the Martinez Valero, a decision widely read inside Spain as confirmation that negotiations over his departure are already underway.

Balde tempted by Old Trafford

Balde’s name is circulating across Europe. Clubs in England, Portugal and Italy have all been alerted, but, according to Catalan outlet Sport, it is Manchester United that most excite the Spain international.

His stance has shifted in recent weeks. All summer, Balde insisted he wanted to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona. The arrival and form of Joao Cancelo have changed the landscape. Direct competition with the Portuguese full-back has pushed Balde to reconsider his future and listen to offers.

United’s left-back problem

United need a left-back. Urgently.

Luke Shaw is heading into the final year of his contract. Diogo Dalot has been pushed higher up the pitch, and both he and Noussair Mazraoui are naturally right-backs being asked to cover on the opposite flank. It is a patchwork solution for a position that demands stability.

Balde fits the profile: young, attack-minded, already tested at the highest level, and comfortable in a possession-heavy side. United have already opened lines of communication with Mendes to explore the conditions of a deal.

At the same time, they are weighing up a far cheaper alternative.

The budget option: Jorge Salinas

On the other end of the scale sits Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old Racing Santander left-back. United are studying him as a lower-cost signing, with his release clause believed to be around £16 million.

The difference in price between Salinas and Balde is stark. That financial gap goes a long way to explaining why United have not yet placed a formal bid for the Barcelona defender. According to Sport, the only concrete offer on the table for Balde so far has come from Benfica, and that proposal falls well short of Barça’s valuation.

Aston Villa are currently seen as the club most capable of matching Barcelona’s demands, but they would need to sell a player first to create the necessary financial room.

Barça’s balancing act

Barcelona’s position is complicated. They need to free up salary and generate income, yet they do not want to lose Balde for a cut-price fee. Only a few months ago, the club internally valued him at around €40–45 million.

The pressure of Financial Fair Play and squad planning is forcing difficult decisions. With the door now open to a Balde exit, the sporting department has already started looking for a new left-back. If he goes and no replacement arrives, the left side of defence would be left to Cancelo and Gerard Martin — thin cover for a team expecting to compete deep into multiple competitions.
