Manchester United and Manchester City are pulling at opposite ends of the Premier League, but in the transfer market their paths are colliding – in Barcelona, in west London, and right across Europe.

United are preparing to open talks with Barcelona over highly rated left-back Alejandro Balde, with the club increasingly concerned about Luke Shaw’s ability to handle the physical load of a season that includes both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

According to Nicolo Schira, United’s interest has moved beyond simple scouting. Direct discussions with Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, are expected soon as the 22-year-old weighs up his future at Camp Nou. ESPN reported on Monday that United have been monitoring Balde’s situation for some time and had already asked about Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall earlier in the window as they search for depth and succession on the left side of defence.

If United are trying to future-proof their back line, City are going straight for Chelsea’s core.

City ready to test Chelsea’s resolve over Enzo

A proposal from Manchester City for Enzo Fernández is coming. The timing remains unclear, but the intent is not. Fabrizio Romano reports that City plan to be aggressive in their pursuit of the 25-year-old midfielder, who has already given the move his approval.

Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle, with the Argentina international described as having given a “green light” to the switch. Schira adds that Fernández is actively pushing for the move, while City are confident they can get a deal done at around €130 million.

If Chelsea resisted for long, it would be a surprise. The financial and sporting implications of losing a World Cup-winning midfielder at the heart of their rebuild, though, would be enormous.

Villa’s striker search hits Palace wall

Aston Villa’s hunt for a striker has taken them to south London – and straight into a valuation they do not like.

The Athletic reports that Villa have submitted an offer for Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, but the bid sits well below Palace’s asking price. Uncertainty over Ollie Watkins’ future has forced Villa to scan the market for attacking cover, with Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo both sidelined by injury.

Mateta, 29, was on Villa’s radar in January as well, and his situation at Palace has become tense amid a dispute over the final year of his contract. For now, though, Palace are standing firm, and Villa must decide whether to pay up or walk away.

Juventus lose patience with Kolo Muani

In Turin, patience is running out. Juventus are reportedly unimpressed with Randal Kolo Muani’s performances since his return to the club and have begun to look elsewhere.
